Methanol vehicles have been popularized in 10 cities of Shanxi, Shanghai, Shaanxi, Guizhou and Gansu for nearly seven years, but they have not yet been developed in scale, mainly due to the following reasons: the calorific value of gasoline is about 10400 kilocalories per kilogram, the calorific value of ethanol is about 6530 kilocalories per kilogram, and the calorific value of methanol combustion is about 4650 kilocalories per kilogram. Methanol is the saturated monobasic alcohol with the simplest structure, As a single fuel for vehicles, it is not ideal. In addition, methanol is a dangerous chemical and can form an explosive mixture when mixed with air. The temperature of the warehouse should not exceed 37 ℃. It must be stored in a cool and well ventilated special warehouse, which is not suitable for use in too hot summer. All of the above limit the operating range of methanol vehicles.

However, the objective fact that cannot be ignored is that China has sufficient methanol fuel resources and mature production technology. Methanol is produced from low-quality coal, coal bed methane and coke oven gas, which has realized the maximum clean and reasonable utilization of coal resources. In the long run, the development of methanol industry is an important means to solve the high dependence on foreign oil, and also has strategic significance to ensure energy safety. Methanol boilers and kilns are engineering applications of methanol fuel thermal combustion to convert chemical energy into heat energy. In these aspects, China has leading international application advantages.

In addition, methanol fuel cells have the advantages of small size, clean and environment-friendly, and convenient fuel use. Using methanol fuel cells can overcome the problems of methanol fuel storage, transportation, and filling. Compared with methanol reforming to hydrogen fuel cells, methanol fuel cells are simpler and more economical in terms of cell structure and reaction steps, which can be regarded as a diversified choice of fuels.

Six years ago, the General Office of the State Council clearly stated in the Opinions of the General Office of the State Council on Strengthening Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction in the Internal Combustion Engine Industry that alternative fuel engines should be encouraged to be compatible with the existing engine manufacturing system; Actively develop diesel/natural gas dual fuel internal combustion engine and biodiesel internal combustion engine; Carry out pilot application of gasoline/methanol dual fuel spark ignition engine and diesel/methanol dual fuel compression ignition engine

Obviously, the supporting power in the future can not only rely on internal combustion engines, but also can be driven by fuel cells, incremental programs, hybrid power and other technologies. Under the trend of diversified supporting power, eight ministries and commissions put forward fuel diversification from the perspective of energy security, which can be said to be of great significance. It cannot be said that the spring of methanol automobile industry has come, but at least it has taken a solid first step.
