Recently, the research group of Professor Cui Yi of Stanford University has studied a new type of folded graphene cage carrier (WGC) for lithium metal anode. WGC provides excellent mechanical strength, higher ionic conductivity and better quality solid electrolyte interface (SEI).

It was found that the uniform and stable SEI interface on the surface of graphene cage carrier could prevent lithium metal from directly contacting with electrolyte. In the current of 0.5mA/cm2, the carbonate electrolyte shows a coulomb efficiency of up to 98.0% from the capacity range of 1-10mAh/cm2, and the cycle life of the battery is greatly improved after the WGC electrode with pre stored lithium is paired with lithium iron phosphate. The mention of Cui Yi is almost unknown in the nano academia. Cui Yi is a regular visitor to academic journals. He is now a tenured professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of Stanford University in the United States. In 2003, he won the "Miller" Young Scientist Award of the United States and was awarded the "Top Ten Outstanding Young Scientists" of the United States. In 2004, 100 young inventors in the world were selected by MIT Technology Review.
