Introduction: Scientists led by the University of Cambridge have created an "ultra-thin" solar cell using gallium arsenide, with a thickness of only 80 nanometers. The III-V family battery achieved a conversion efficiency of 9.08%, and its developers demonstrated in simulation that if further optimized, it can reach 16%. Due to its light weight and inherent radiation resistance, the battery may be suitable for powering satellites and other applications in space.

Gallium arsenide (GaAs) and other battery materials from the III-V family have long been an area of interest for solar photovoltaic researchers due to their high efficiency potential. However, the cost of materials limits them to niche applications such as drones and space travel.

Making equipment thinner and minimizing the use of valuable materials is a fully explored method for reducing manufacturing costs. For GaAs already feasible niche applications, it is a valuable prospect to reduce weight by making the device thinner, and thinner devices also show higher resistance to higher radiation levels outside Atmosphere of Earth.
