On May 30, Wei Jianjun, Chairman of Great Wall Motors, said in an interview with the reporter of the 21st Century Economic Report that although the development of hydrogen fueled vehicles is of great significance, it is still difficult to achieve commercialization.

Because hydrogen fuel cannot be obtained directly from nature, it needs to be manufactured artificially. The commonly used hydrogen production methods include catalytic hydrogen production from fossil fuels, hydrogen production from industrial by-products, biological hydrogen production and solar energy hydrogen production, but the effect is not ideal, the equipment is complex and the investment is large. Of course, hydrogen can be obtained by electrolysis of water, but the energy consumption is high. There is no optimal plan for industrial hydrogen production, which still needs to be developed.

"Although China's oil, steel and other industries are very large at present, the proportion of by-product hydrogen in these industries is very small. In the hydrogen society, these outputs are far from enough." Wei Jianjun believes that the biggest factor restricting the development of hydrogen fueled vehicles is the imperfect industrial chain. The whole process of hydrogen production, transportation, storage and hydrogenation requires time to build a complete industrial chain.

"From the definition of clean energy, hydrogen fuel must have a clean hydrogen production process. If we still convert fossil energy into hydrogen, I don't think it is meaningful." Wei Jianjun told reporters, "If we can use cheaper clean energy to produce, store, transport and then add hydrogen, it will be valuable."

In Wei Jianjun's opinion, hydrogen fuel vehicles are relatively hot recently, which should be viewed more rationally. The development of hydrogen fuel industry requires patience. "It is not that Great Wall Motors now has a hydrogen fuel stack, and we can build this industry with the power of hydrogen fuel. The development of the industrial chain is a long-term process. It is more difficult to build an industrial chain of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles than electric vehicles. The hydrogen fuel cell vehicle industry chain needs to be cultivated, and the maturity of technology is still a long time away from commercialization." Wei Jianjun believes that because the cost of developing hydrogen fuel is difficult to control, the large-scale application of hydrogen fuel vehicles is more suitable for commercial vehicles, such as trucks, buses, urban buses, etc., so that the cost can be effectively reduced by batch operation.

In Wei Jianjun's opinion, hydrogen fuel technology is not suitable for small passenger cars, and hydrogen fuel technology will be used in the development of large passenger cars in the future. Great Wall Motors' hydrogen fueled SUV models will be used during the Winter Olympics in 2022.

On May 30, Great Wall Motors opened its hydrogen energy technology center to the media for the first time. In the future, Great Wall Motors will promote the continuous improvement of the industrial chain and reduce costs through an open supply system. Therefore, Great Wall Motors does not only manufacture hydrogen fuel vehicles in the research and development of hydrogen fuel vehicle technology, but also create a professional hydrogen fuel power system and become a supplier of hydrogen fuel power system. It is understood that Great Wall Motors has taken the lead in building the largest comprehensive test center for key components of hydrogen energy and fuel cell vehicles in China, including the first 105MPa high-pressure hydrogen cycle test bench in China, the first 6-axis hydrogen storage bottle winding machine in China, the first fuel cell power system test bench in China, and the first liquid hydrogen storage and refueling station in China. It is equipped with the testing and trial production of core components of fuel cell vehicles, And vehicle integration and test capability.
