Physicists at ITMO University have discovered a new method that can use transparent materials for solar cells while maintaining their efficiency. The new technology is based on doping methods, which change the properties of materials by adding impurities, but does not require the use of expensive specialized equipment.

The results of this study have been published in ACSApplied Materials&Interfaces ("Ion Gated Small Molecule OPV: Interface Doping of Charge Collectors and Transport Layers").

One of the most attractive challenges of solar energy is the development of transparent thin film photosensitive materials. This film can be applied to the top of ordinary windows to generate energy without affecting the appearance of the building. However, developing solar cells that combine high efficiency and good transmittance is very difficult.

Conventional thin film solar cells have opaque metal back contact, which can capture more light. Transparent solar cells use transparent back electrodes. In this case, certain photons will inevitably be lost when passing through, thereby reducing the performance of the device. In addition, producing a back electrode with appropriate performance can be very expensive, "said Pavel Voroshilov, a researcher at the School of Physics and Engineering at ITMO University.
