According to foreign media reports, Chinese and Japanese enterprises have agreed to standardize the next generation electric vehicle (EV) fast charging system. The two sides will jointly develop a charging pile before 2020, which can fully charge the vehicle in less than 10 minutes.

China, Japan and Europe have fallen into a tug of war over the standard of electric vehicle charging system. By working together, China and Japan will occupy 90% of the fast charging pile market, an important step towards achieving global standards.

The Japan Electric Vehicle Fast Charger Association (CHAdeMo) is an association composed of a group of automobile and battery manufacturers, which promotes the Japanese fast charging standard. The association is expected to sign an agreement with China Electricity Council (CEC) in Beijing at the end of this month. CEC has also promoted the charging standard of China's electric vehicles, called the Recommended National Standard (GB/T).

Now, Japan's fast charging system can output 150kw of power, while China's fast charging system can output about 50kw of power. The goal of China and Japan is to commercialize new fast charging systems that can output more than 500kw. At present, it takes about 30 minutes for Japanese cars to use the fast charging pile for charging. Finally, the new fast charging system can reduce the charging time to less than 10 minutes.

It is expected that Japan will provide China with technical expertise in rapid charging and safety management, while China will provide Japan with charging parts and other resources. Due to Japan's leading position in technology development, the new standard fast charging system is expected to be based on Japanese technology.

The rapid charging system designed by the R&D personnel will be different due to different plug shapes, different displays that tell users the charge amount and other factors. Japan's CHAdeMo standard, China's GB/T standard and European Combined Charging System (Combo) standard are currently competing for the leading position in this field. If the Chinese and Japanese teams succeed in creating global standards, it will be easier for Japan to export electric vehicles, benefiting battery manufacturers with advanced production and sales expertise.

In 2018, more than 80% of the fast charging piles, or 220000, were installed worldwide. Because China leads the world in the number of electric vehicles, China's GB/T standards are adopted. This number is far more than 18000 fast charging piles installed with Japanese CHAdeMo and 7000 charging piles installed with European Combo.

At present, the system used in the United States is similar to the European system. Once the system cooperated by China and Japan has successfully become a global standard, the United States may also adopt the new system.
