Replacing a battery is a common occurrence in car repair shops and the daily lives of car owners. In the past, a friend also asked how to replace a BMW battery. Today, this article will provide a detailed introduction to how to replace a battery:

1. Dismantling old batteries

(1) Confirm the installation location of the battery. Most models are installed in the engine compartment or luggage compartment, while some models are installed in the driver's cabin. Take appropriate body protection measures in the corresponding positions.

(2) Remove external protective devices such as battery protective covers, measure the voltage between the two poles with a multimeter, or check the battery status through the observation hole, and explain these situations to the customer.

(3) If the vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft system (including audio anti-theft), an external power supply can be connected first, or a fully charged battery can be connected in parallel. Pay attention to connecting the positive pole first and then the negative pole. The positive pole of the external power supply can be directly connected to the positive terminal of the battery, but the negative pole should not be directly connected to the negative terminal of the battery, but should be connected to the ground connection of the vehicle body.

(4) Turn off the ignition switch of the faulty vehicle (some models should be placed in the ON position, such as the Volvo S80 produced before 2005, which should be based on the maintenance manual), first disconnect the negative connection wire of the battery, and then disconnect the positive connection wire. If the battery has a vent pipe, it should be removed first.

(5) Remove the fixing device of the battery and take out the battery. If the vehicle is connected to an external power source, be careful not to let the positive wire come into contact with the vehicle body, and use cotton cloth or other materials for isolation.

(6) If the old battery has leakage corrosion, it is also necessary to clean the battery connection wires, etc.

(1) Before installing a new battery, if the brand and model of the battery are not consistent, the external dimensions and terminal positions of the new and old batteries should be compared, and the capacity and cold start current parameters of the battery should be carefully checked. Especially in winter in the north, if the cold start current does not match, it may cause difficulties in starting the vehicle.

(2) If conditions permit, a battery tester should be used for testing. Some batteries, although the voltage between the positive and negative poles is higher than 12V after being left for a long time, actually have insufficient capacity, which is known as virtual charge. These batteries need to be charged. It should be noted that measurements must be taken when the ambient temperature is above 0 ℃, and charging should be carried out when it is above 5 ℃.

(3) Place the new battery in the installation position and secure it. Don't forget to remove the vent pipe connector from the old battery and install it on the new battery when it comes to batteries with a vent pipe. Regarding lead-acid batteries, it is important to note that the tilt angle of the battery during installation should not exceed 30 degrees.

(4) When connecting the battery wiring, first connect the positive pole and then the negative pole. After installation, rust inhibitor or acid free grease can be sprayed on the battery terminals for protection.

(5) After checking and confirming the reliability of the fastening, the external power supply can be removed. Start the engine and check the generator voltage. It can be measured at the generator output terminal or at the battery terminal. If there is dedicated diagnostic equipment, the voltage data in the data stream can also be read. Additionally, it is recommended to measure separately at engine idle and 2000r/min.

(6) Regarding vehicles that have replaced batteries due to discharge faults, the dormant current of the vehicle should also be checked. The traditional method is to place the multimeter in the current range, then connect it in series to the negative terminal of the battery, lock all door locks, turn off the ignition switch and activate the anti-theft system, and let it sit for a period of time until the current stabilizes.

(7) For vehicles equipped with a power management system, sensors are installed in the negative pole line, and such vehicles can only use devices such as clamp ammeters for current testing. Generally speaking, the sleep current of a vehicle should be less than 50mA (according to the vehicle maintenance manual, for example, some BMW models only require less than 80mA).

(8) After replacing the battery, the diagnostic tool should also be used to clear the relevant fault codes recorded in the system. For vehicles equipped with a power management system, such as German brands such as Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Audi, it is necessary to input the new battery model into the power management system and perform a system reset.

(9) After confirming the correctness of the electrical system inspection, install the battery protection device, remove the vehicle body protection facilities, close the engine compartment cover or luggage compartment cover, and return the vehicle to the customer.
