Everyone is paying attention to the development of battery cell technology, the level of battery cell life and safety, but it seems that little attention has been paid to the level of battery pack technology and the application of new technologies. I think this has a lot to do with the current owners and executors of the PACK technology.

Why should the main body of the main battery PACK be the vehicle manufacturer?

At present, battery PACK technology is generally implemented by three types of entities: battery cell manufacturing companies, vehicle manufacturing companies and third-party independent or joint venture professional PACK companies. According to incomplete statistics, 60-70% of PACK is completed by electric cell companies (almost 100% in the passenger car field), 10-20% is completed by vehicle companies, and 20% is completed by third parties. Cell manufacturing companies are best at cell technology, so they will have a big say in this area, which is one of the reasons why the development of PACK technology is blocked.

Personally, I think it is unreasonable for the battery cell company to assume the main responsibility of PACK. It should be led by the vehicle manufacturer to lead the healthy and rapid development of PACK technology. Based on the following considerations:

First, the complexity and systematicness of PACK technology cannot be solved by the engineering capability involved in the cell technology. PACK technology involves many disciplines, such as machinery, electronics and electrical appliances, heat, fluid, etc., while the electric core involves more chemistry, materials and thermal engineering, with less intersection. The professionals involved in PACK technology are necessary in the automotive industry and more professional. If a cell company needs to be equipped with so many professional personnel, it will require a lot of capital injection. In the current conditions, most cell plants do not have these conditions. So the final result is that although we can do the PACK ourselves, it is more like building blocks, just simple assembly, which is not the development of technology.

Second, the vehicle manufacturers themselves can better understand their own needs, and can consider issues from the perspective of the overall system in the design of the PACK, so as to better realize the organic coordination and unity of the PACK and the vehicle.

Third, the current international mainstream vehicle PACK technology is the vehicle oriented and core factory assisted mode. LEAF PACK is led by Nissan and supplied by NEC; TESLA's PACK is dominated by TESLA itself, and Panasonic only supplies monomer; Volanda, Prius, etc. are all in this mode. In this mode, the battery cell factory only needs to provide necessary support according to the vehicle factory's demand for battery cell parameters and design, and its main responsibility is to make a consistent battery cell.

Fourth, the field of passenger cars belongs to a special group. The shipping outlets of the international market are basically in China, while the bus space is relatively loose, and the technical strength of the bus factory is not at the same level as that of passenger cars. Therefore, this part of PACK is basically completed by the cell factory. However, the level of passenger cars should be kept up in the future.

Complex systems should pay more attention to specialization and fine division of labor, prevent monopolization and improve system efficiency. From this point of view, the PACK development mode led by the vehicle factory and assisted by the electric core factory should be the inevitable choice in the future. Based on this judgment, the market structure of PACK for electric vehicles in the later period will change greatly compared with that in the present period.
