Sometimes when I brag or listen to others, I often hear the word IP67, which gives me a very strong feeling. But I don't know what IP67 is anymore. So take this opportunity to learn more.

For learning a new thing, my routine is to find relevant standards or authoritative documents and lay a good foundation; As for what IP67 is, we should start with the following standards:

First, what is IP?

The explanation found in the four standards is International Protection, that is, international protection (as shown in the figure below); Another explanation is Ingress Protection, that is, access protection, but the standard does not write this way, although we often see this translation. The meaning of IP code is to specify the degree of protection of the shell to the product.

ISO20653 is evolved from IEC60529 (as shown in the figure below), which adds a description specifically for road vehicles. This is the main difference between the two, which will be mentioned below.

First, let me show you the representation of IP level in the two standards (as shown in the figure below): both are composed of four codes, each representing different content; The first, second and fourth places in the two standards are somewhat different.

The IP code includes three meanings, which are stated at the beginning of the standard: the protection of the shell against personnel safety, the protection against solid foreign matters, and the protection against water; The protection of personnel safety is easy to be omitted.

See the standard for the detailed code meaning, so I won't waste your time; A key point is that in ISO 20653, several two-digit codes are added to the first two codes (as shown in the figure below). For example, we see IP6K7. As long as there is K in it, it means that the standard he refers to is ISO 20653.

Therefore, IP67 at the beginning of the article is rated with reference to IEC 60529 standard, that is, the shell needs to achieve dust sealing, short time immersion, and prevent the contact of metal wires. In addition, the standard also specifies the test method and judgment basis.

Specifically, in the battery system, the entire PACK box needs to achieve IP67 level, which is generally accepted, and the sealing method and process of the box are also introduced in many materials; But does the BMS shell inside the box need to achieve IP67?

To answer this question, first confirm the installation position of the BMS. If it is installed outside the PACK box (although few), it must meet the protection requirements of IP67; If it is inside the PACK box, I personally think it is not necessary to meet such high requirements, and the cost is unbearable. It is rarely seen in competitive products. If BMS really wants to design a shell that meets IP67, the biggest difficulty lies in the joint between the connector and the shell. In addition, the cost of waterproof connector is really high.
