According to foreign media reports, scientists at the University of Arizona in the United States have developed a paper-based lithium-ion battery that can be folded in half or into Miura-ori type (similar to the map folding method) for many times. Since it becomes smaller after folding, the surface energy density and capacitance can be increased by 14 times. This kind of folded paper-based battery is flexible, low cost, and can be manufactured by roller. It is expected to be further developed into a multi-purpose high-performance battery. The traditional lithium-ion battery uses lithium-based powder as the electrode, while this kind of folded lithium-ion battery uses carbon nanotube (CNT) ink as the electrode, uses thin and breathable Kimwipes tissue (a kind of laboratory tissue) as the substrate, and applies a layer of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) coating to enhance the adhesion between CNT ink and paper base. Finally, the battery shows excellent conductivity and relatively stable capacitance.

The researchers carried out a folding experiment on the battery. First, they folded it in half, and then used the more complex Miura ori folding type. After simple folding once, twice and three times, its surface energy density and capacitance are 1.9, 4.7 and 10.6 times higher than that of the flat cell without folding; Miura-ori folding type is more efficient: put a 6cm sheet × After the 7-cm paper battery is folded into 25 layers, the overall area is only 1.68 square cm, while the surface energy density and capacitance are increased to 14 times.

With the development of geometric folding algorithms, computer tools and robot operations, more complex folding types will be developed for large-scale manufacturing and commercial use. Zhan said that combining the origami concept with paper-based energy storage devices will bring about the update of shape, geometric design and function, which has infinite possibilities. In the future, the power supply and other components will be developed into a foldable device.
