Australia and Chile are the two largest lithium mining countries in the world. However, due to different geological and climatic conditions, they have different ways of producing lithium.

The Greenbushes mine in Western Australia supplies one-third of the world's lithium ore. Its production process includes mining hard rock and preliminary on-site treatment, including crushing, grinding and flotation.

Lithium mines in Chile need to extract lithium-rich brine from salt lakes. The brine is concentrated in the evaporation tank for several months, and then preliminary treatment is carried out on site. Chile's main lithium mining area is located in the north of the country, which is part of the so-called global "lithium triangle", including the border areas of Chile, Argentina and Bolivia.

Lithium production in Western Australia will grow strongly

Greenbushes lithium mine area is undergoing project expansion. In the past two years, two mines in the eastern part of the state, MountCattlin and MountMarion, have also begun to resume production. This year, the output of three new mines in Pilbara will also increase, while the rest of the mines are in different planning stages.

Lithium production in South America will increase significantly

SQM and Albemarle, the two major lithium producers in Chile, reached an agreement with the Chilean government in the first quarter of this year to increase their production. In Argentina, FMC, a major lithium producer, plans to expand its lithium production.

Other mining countries, such as Canada, Mexico and Africa, have also begun to pay more attention to lithium production.

Lithium processing market

In the application of electric vehicle batteries, lithium is usually processed into super-grade lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide, which is more expensive but also more energy-saving. With the development of mining industry, processing is also increasing. Australia, the United States, South America and China are all building or planning to build and expand factories.

China plays an important role in the global lithium processing, and China also provides the largest lithium ion battery market for the world. Chinese mining companies are actively engaged in mining, processing and purchasing lithium ore and lithium concentrate in other parts of the world. For example, in Australia, the Chinese company Tianqi Lithium is one of the operators of Greenbushes Lithium, while other Chinese companies hold the equity of Australian Lithium.

Lithium has a bright future

Most lithium companies are optimistic about the future. Orocobre, an Australian company, believes that "the growth of lithium demand in the future will exceed the expected new supply". Especially against the background of strong growth in electric vehicle production, some analysts believe that the global production will reach at least 15 million by 2025. In 2017, there were only about 1 million electric vehicles in the world.

But not everyone believes that lithium supply will lag demand for a period of time. For example, in the report released last month, Morgan Stanley and Wood McCann predicted that lithium supply would catch up from next year to meet global lithium demand. Morgan Stanley expects that lithium price will drop by about 45% by 2021.

There is no doubt that the supply and demand of lithium will grow strongly in the next few years.
