As we all know, the development of electrification is one of the most profound changes in the century since the birth of automobiles. As a pioneer in the field of new energy, General Motors' growth pace is closely linked to the development of electric technology. As early as 1912, it has manufactured electric trucks, and in 1996, it launched the industry's first mass production pure electric vehicle EV1 customized for electrification. After that, General Motors created the Chevrolet Volt Volt, creating a precedent for add-on electric vehicles, and launched the Chevrolet Bolt, an electric vehicle with both ultra-long range and affordable prices.

Over the past 20 years, General Motors has accumulated rich experience in electrification research and development, while SAIC General Motors, relying on its parent company's deep technical reserves, has become one of the earliest "electric shock" manufacturers in domestic joint venture vehicle companies. Currently, it has fully covered a variety of technical types such as hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric, as well as mainstream vehicle body forms such as sedans, SUVs, and MPVs.

In 2020, General Motors launched the new Ultium intelligent pure electric platform, comprehensively opening the pace of electrification transformation. SAIC General Motors and Pan Asia Automotive Technology Center have participated in synchronous design and development of the underlying architecture of the platform, and rely on a highly localized business chain system to achieve localized procurement of the over 95% of the components. With the advantages of flexibility, safety, and intelligence of the Ultium platform, SAIC General Motors will quickly promote the launch of a new generation of electric products. The first intelligent pure electric luxury SUV, the Cadillac RIQ, will be available for pre-sale within the year and will be listed in China in the first half of next year. By 2025, SAIC General Motors will launch more than 10 domestic new energy models based on the Ultium platform, covering the three major brands of Buick, Chevrolet, and Cadillac, further consolidating the company's product strategic layout for electric travel.

According to Yin Jianmin, Executive Director of Drive Systems at Pan Asia Automotive Technology Center Co., Ltd., General Motors' Ultium intelligent pure electric platform has comprehensive technical flexibility. It uses replaceable and upgradeable battery modules and flexible cell placement methods, which can easily support functional upgrades and cell formulation optimization. Both lithium iron phosphate batteries and lithium ternary batteries, as well as lithium metal batteries and solid-state batteries that may be used in the future, can be used; In terms of safety, the battery development and testing of the Ultium platform comply with the stringent standards of General Motors' global new energy vehicles, which are far higher than the national standard requirements. At the same time, it meets the ASIL-D level system functional safety requirements, which is the highest standard for the safety of electronic and electrical systems in the automotive industry. The optimized formulation of its ternary lithium battery improves thermal stability by 10%, with the advantages of low attenuation and long life. Relying on a real-time intelligent monitoring system, a "thermal insulation wall" patent between cells, a patented technology for suppressing heat diffusion, an integrated patented liquid cooling system, a large area explosion-proof valve, a module, and a packaged patented fireproof design, as well as seven protections against arcing, Ultium platform batteries achieve industry-leading thermal stability performance, and support full life cycle rapid charging with little impact on battery capacity. In addition, the new battery physical protection architecture adopts a high-strength well shaped frame structure, with a compression resistance of 3 times that of the national standard. With the sealing grade of IP67 dustproof and waterproof and IP6K9K high-pressure water spray protection, the Ultium platform can comprehensively meet the design standards for voltage, electrical energy, physical protection, and insulation of the load end of the electrical system for electric vehicles with five-star safety; In addition, the Ultium platform is the first electric platform in the industry to adopt a wireless battery management system (wBMS), which can reduce wiring harness by 90%, reduce weight, and add a new volume energy density, improving range, bringing lower failure rates. In addition, the wireless battery management system can greatly simplify the production process of battery packs and bring many benefits to battery recycling.

Industry experts have highly praised SAIC General Motors' achievements in the field of electrification and the launch of General Motors' Ultium intelligent pure electric platform. Sun Fengchun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said, "Carbon peak and carbon neutrality are ambitious goals for the future. Wang Zidong, Deputy Secretary General of China Automotive Power Lithium Battery Industry Innovation Alliance, pointed out: "WBMS wireless battery management is a technology that has caught the industry's eye, and this innovation has a strong driving role in the continuous iterative development of the electric industry."

It is worth mentioning that at this forum, SAIC General Motors not only demonstrated the three technical advantages of safety, intelligence, and flexibility of GM's Ultium intelligent pure electric platform, but also donated the Buick Micro Blue 7 pure electric SUV and Micro Blue 6 plug-in hybrid battery pack teaching aids to the School of Machinery and Vehicles of Beijing University of Technology to stimulate and encourage young students to learn about automotive electrification. In the future, the two sides will further expand the scale of school-enterprise cooperation, providing opportunities and platforms for university students to visit and learn, share knowledge, and obtain employment through internships.

It is reported that in order to comply with the new technological development trend in the industry, SAIC General Motors will also increase investment. It is expected that by 2025, the planned investment in the field of new technologies in electrification and intelligent networking will exceed 50 billion yuan.
