To what extent should pure electric vehicles be considered mature?

Charging speed is undoubtedly one of the most important hard indicators.

Regarding the current power lithium battery technology, it is not realistic to meet the standard of fully charging a fuel powered vehicle in 5 minutes. However, the current speed of "charging for 30 minutes and running for 200km" is indeed too fast. Even the TSLA V3 supercharge station only has a maximum charging power of 250kW (15 minutes, 200km+). Coupled with the low density of fast charging piles nationwide, any consumer must weigh their options between "fuel versus pure electricity".

On August 30th, GAC Aian held an online announcement meeting, officially announcing the ultra fast battery technology and A480 overcharging pile to the public. The former can achieve an ultra fast charging speed of "charging for 5 minutes and a range of 200 kilometers", while the latter reaches the world's highest charging power of up to 480kW. These two things will solve the dilemma of "slow charging" for pure electric vehicles from the perspectives of charging and receiving charging.

The first is ultra fast battery technology. To understand why GAC Aian's new battery can achieve "super fast", we first need to understand the working mode of lithium batteries.

Almost all power lithium batteries, including ternary lithium batteries, lithium iron phosphate battery, and sodium ion batteries, are composed of positive and negative electrodes, electrolyte, and separators, but the materials and processes are different, which will affect battery capacity, charge and discharge power, service life, temperature sensitivity, and other characteristics. During operation, the lithium/sodium ions inside the battery will detach, migrate, and embed between the positive and negative electrodes, while the external flow is the directed flow of electrons, i.e. current.

The biggest factor affecting the charging speed of a battery is the efficiency of lithium/sodium ion intercalation. When an external high voltage is applied (charging), the faster the ion energy can "swim" from the positive electrode to the negative electrode per unit time, the faster the charging speed.

The latest ultra fast battery technology of GAC New Energy has been upgraded and optimized in three aspects: positive/negative electrode materials, intermediate separators, and electrolytes. Thanks to the application of technologies such as high porosity coated ceramic membranes, new low viscosity and high-power electrolytes, and unique soft carbon/hard carbon/graphene coating modification technology, especially the conductive agent prepared using three-dimensional structured graphene (3DG), a comprehensive improvement in ion "moving speed" has been achieved.

In order to meet the high-power charging needs of ultra fast batteries, GAC Aian has also developed A480 supercharging piles as supporting facilities. Its external charging voltage reaches 880V, with a maximum power of 480kW, which is more powerful than the current Porsche Taycan 800V charging platform or TSLA V3 supercharging piles. One can provide high-power charging and the other can receive high-power charging, ultimately achieving a historic breakthrough in "charging for 5 minutes and driving for 200 kilometers" for pure electric vehicles.

Simply put, for an 880V/480kW charging station, the maximum instantaneous current can reach 550A (officially stated as 600A). Three or five of them are fine, and the pressure on the power grid caused by the simultaneous operation of ten or twenty such charging stations is also very astonishing. Therefore, the installation of such charging piles is not only the responsibility of manufacturers, but also the responsibility of urban planning and grid coordination, truly a new infrastructure project that "drives the whole body".

Of course, it should also be noted that we cannot simply calculate the time required to charge XXkWh based on the charging power according to the formula. Because it is impossible for any high-power DC charging station to be plugged in and charged at maximum power. To achieve peak power, the remaining battery power cannot be too low or too high. Even when multiple charging stations work simultaneously in the same area, digital collaboration between charging stations can be achieved through cloud computing, which can be considered a form of resource allocation.
