Along with the BYD battery project are the Audi FAW new energy project with an investment of 30 billion yuan, the Red Flag Silk Sports Car project with an investment of 10 billion yuan, and the Jida Red Flag Academy project with an investment of 8.9 billion yuan.

Regarding the news of the BYD battery project settling in Changchun, BYD insiders stated that they are currently unable to provide an accurate answer, and everything will be subject to the announcement. However, as of now, BYD has not announced a joint venture with FAW Group to build a battery project.

Jointly with FAW Group, BYD Battery Settles in Changchun

Although BYD has not responded positively to the settlement of the battery factory in Changchun, the current situation shows that this matter is firmly established. First, official media reported that the BYD battery project was about to settle, and then local government leaders and Wang Chuanfu witnessed the signing of the contract between BYD, FAW Group, and Changchun Municipal Government.

In fact, the BYD battery project has settled in Changchun and has an inseparable relationship with FAW Group, and FAW Group has become a very important customer for BYD's battery business.

In the first batch of new energy vehicle recommendations this year, the Pentium E05 is equipped with a BYD blade battery. This model will focus on the travel market, similar to another recently launched BYD D1 that focuses on the travel market. The car also adopts a design of a right side sliding door. It is reported that BYD and FAW Group have established deep cooperation in the fields of vehicle manufacturing, design, and batteries.

Currently, FAW Hongqi and Pentium have both announced their electrification strategies, and BYD's heavy investment in FAW Group's hometown of Changchun may have strategic significance. At present, the manufacturing of lithium batteries is mainly concentrated in South China and East China from a regional perspective, while there are not many production bases for power lithium batteries in North China, especially in the three eastern provinces. The electrification supporting facilities in the three eastern provinces are relatively scarce, and with the establishment of BYD, this situation may change.

From BYD's perspective, in the past few years, BYD's batteries have been mainly produced and sold by itself. Although BYD has proposed an open strategy in recent years, the external supply of batteries is not obvious. In the field of passenger cars, BYD batteries are currently supplied to FAW Group, Changan Automobile, Beijing Automobile, Dongfeng Automobile, Xiaokang Co., Ltd., Landu Automobile, and Ford. However, only FAW Group uses blade batteries, and there is more than one BYD battery model supporting it, Only FAW Group is available.

CATL and BYD are both binding with FAW Group

As the eldest son of the Republic, FAW Group's position in the domestic automotive industry is self-evident, and the fact is that both domestic battery leading companies are currently vying for this customer.

According to the statistics of the recommended directory for new energy vehicles by the Tramway Data Think Tank, the new energy vehicle battery suppliers declared by FAW Group include CATL, Funeng Technology, Yipeng Energy, Tafel, Lishen, Thornton New Energy, and Xingheng Power, among which CATL has the most supporting models.

Starting from the first batch of recommended catalogs this year, FAW Group has started to apply for models equipped with BYD blade batteries, and has been significantly applied to the Hongqi E-QM5 model. However, the batteries are not exclusively supplied by BYD, and FAW Group is also applying for models equipped with CATL ternary batteries.

Although BYD has established a cooperative foundation with FAW Group and its supporting models have been launched, the cooperation between CATL and FAW Group has reached a deeper level.

In January 2019, CATL and FAW Group jointly established Times FAW Power Lithium Battery Co., Ltd. and settled in Xiapu, Fujian for project cooperation and development. The first phase of the project was completed and put into operation by the end of September 2020, and the second phase of the project started construction in early January this year, with plans to be completed and put into use before the end of the year. In early February of this year, CATL announced that Time FAW plans to invest 5 billion yuan in expanding its battery project.

The current situation is that the cooperation between CATL and FAW Group has been put into operation, and as a major shareholder, CATL is still adding investment to related battery projects; As a latecomer, BYD directly built its battery base just one step away from the FAW Group's entire vehicle production base.
