Li Zhenqiang, the head of Gaogong Lithium Battery Industry Research Institute, stated that currently there are only one or two domestic companies that can meet this requirement. It is understood that there are currently about 30 companies with the production capacity of drones, mainly concentrated in Guangdong Province.

The first local standard is expected to be released next year

It is understood that Guangdong Quality Inspection Institute is also the Secretariat of the Guangdong Provincial Power Lithium Battery Standardization Technical Committee. The Daily Economic News reporter learned that the focus of the seminar discussion is mainly on the electrical performance requirements, high-temperature storage range, and environmental adaptability of lithium-ion batteries for drones.

He Longping told reporters that in the past two years, the drone market has developed rapidly, and many drone companies and related accessory companies have begun to enter. However, batteries have become the main culprit in multiple drone explosions and fires. In this context, Guangdong Quality Inspection Institute proposed this standard, with the original intention of regulating industry development, ensuring consumer safety, preventing vicious competition, and improving the competitiveness of Chinese companies in entering the international market. The standard is expected to be released in June 2016.

Li Zhenqiang stated that 80% of the market share of drone and drone lithium-ion battery companies is concentrated in Guangdong Province. The publication of local standards will help promote the development of the domestic drone battery industry.

Regarding whether this standard is a mandatory standard, He Longping stated that this standard will become the most important basis for drone machine companies to choose suppliers, a threshold for entry into the drone battery industry, and also provide evidence for relevant quality inspection units to supervise product execution. This year, the domestic market size of lithium-ion batteries for drones is about 6 billion yuan. After the rise of plant protection drones, this market will double. He Longping stated that the future development of lithium-ion batteries for drones still depends on the drone market.

According to him, the use environment of the lithium-ion battery for UAV is special and the price is high. Taking the battery of Dajiang Science and Technology Fairy 3 as an example, the market price is as high as 840 yuan/piece. In general, an unmanned machine has the opportunity to equip multiple lithium-ion batteries. This market is very imaginative.

In May of this year, Xinwangda (300207, SZ) confirmed on the investor interaction platform that it had collaborated with Dajiang Technology to supply drone lithium-ion batteries and power management systems. In addition, it is understood that Desai batteries (000049, SZ) are also actively entering the drone lithium-ion battery industry.

High temperature energy storage is difficult for most cell factories

It is understood that there are currently about 30 companies in China with the production capacity of lithium-ion batteries for drones, and the drone market is also emerging in China, the United States, and Europe. He Longping said.

According to relevant attendees, Dajiang Technology has proposed a high-temperature storage regulation at the seminar based on the usage situation in different regions around the world. From the perspective of high-temperature storage conditions, after the battery pack is fully charged, it is stored in a 60 ℃ environment for 30 days. The battery (pack) is removed from the storage environment, and after the battery temperature drops to room temperature, it is subjected to a 0.5C rated capacity test at room temperature. The discharge time is not less than 1.5 hours, and the battery should not bulge, leak, rupture, ignite, smoke, or explode.

This regulation sparked heated discussions at the seminar. The Daily Economic News reporter noticed that this regulation alone has already blocked most battery cell factories from the drone battery industry.

He Longping also revealed that battery cell manufacturers find it too difficult. Dajiang Technology indeed has many strict requirements, but it is precisely because of this that Dajiang drones are highly recognized in both domestic and foreign markets.

Li Zhenqiang also told reporters that there are significant differences in the performance of lithium-ion battery products for drones in China. According to the above standards, only one or two companies in China can meet the requirements.

He believes that the regulations proposed by DJI Technology indicate that DJI has already locked in several suppliers, but it cannot be ruled out that DJI uses different suppliers to supply different products in its layout. Previously, a well-known drone battery company in the industry was notorious for its poor high-temperature storage performance and severe bulging. He Longping told reporters.

Li Zhenqiang stated that traditional lithium-ion batteries have poor stability in discharge and other performance in high-temperature environments, making it difficult to meet the requirements for high-temperature storage of unmanned aerial vehicles.
