From the perspective of the overall industry trend, power lithium battery manufacturers affected by costs and supply and demand have adjusted prices multiple times. On March 21st, CATL stated that due to the significant increase in upstream raw material prices, the company will dynamically adjust the prices of some battery products.

According to data released by the China Automotive Power Lithium Battery Industry Innovation Alliance, in 2021, the installed capacity of power lithium batteries in China was 154.5GWh. Among them, CATL ranks first with 80.51GWh of loading volume, accounting for 52.1%. The installed capacity of Yiwei Lithium Energy is 2.92 GWh, ranking eighth.

In a later interview with the media, Zhengdao Xiaopeng stated that for domestic car companies, the tight supply of power lithium batteries will still be a significant challenge. Although the price inflection point is gradually emerging, with the rapid development of the new energy vehicle market, it still takes time for the tight supply of power lithium batteries to be alleviated.

Q: The upstream raw material prices of batteries have experienced a surge, and how long will it last in the long run?

A: The rise in material prices has combined with the rapid development of power lithium batteries and energy storage. The result of the increase has led to insufficient material resources, resulting in a price increase.

However, from the current supply and demand relationship, the behavior of end consumers may limit the price increase of materials. When lithium carbonate rose to around 500000 yuan, the procurement of energy storage users had already been somewhat divided and wavered. Some A0 class models in the electric vehicle industry no longer took orders, as this would result in losses. So I believe that at this stage, the price of materials should be around the high point.

From the perspective of healthy industry development, a downward trend at this stage may be relatively healthy for the industry. This is my opinion, further upward movement may not be feasible.

Q: What specific measures does Yiwei Lithium take to cope with price increases?

A: Since last year, we have been building the entire supply chain from lithium, nickel, cobalt to electrolytes and separators. Starting from this year, these joint venture and cooperative factories have all started to be constructed one after another, which will definitely be of great help to the subsequent market competitiveness. And we have established a long-term and effective partnership with our supply chain partners, which will make us more at ease when facing future price fluctuations in the industry.

Q: Has Yiwei Lithium Energy adjusted the prices of raw materials due to an increase in prices?

A: In the first quarter of this year, material prices rose faster. As an important company in the industry, we hoped to smooth out the rapid price fluctuations, so we did not arrange for a rapid price increase at that time. However, with the development of the market to this day, we have analyzed that the price will stabilize at this price level for a period of time. Therefore, we have actively discussed with important customers and have reached a consensus on the price, which should be adjusted within March.

But in the process of adjusting prices, we have significantly felt changes in the market, including energy storage batteries. Some important customers have explicitly raised a price red line, and if it exceeds a certain price, they cannot continue to do so. Based on this judgment, we also believe that the price on the supply side should be around the high point.

Q: The current situation of tight battery supply should still exist. What is the company's production scheduling situation?

A: In fact, many battery supplies are still tight, and our production lines in various factories should be fully booked.

Q: What is the future production plan?

A: Our production planning is based on market demand. Yiwei Lithium Energy has announced a production capacity of nearly 200GWh and is currently under construction. By the end of this year, it will be gradually completed and put into operation in the first half of 2023.

Q: In 2021, Yiwei Lithium ranked eighth on the domestic list of installed capacity of power lithium batteries. What are its market goals for this year?

A: Last year ranked eighth, but in fact, we should have delivered more batteries because a batch of batteries were handed over to customers in Europe and South Korea. Last year, we produced and sold 10GWh of light soft pack lithium batteries, and overall, we are still in the top ten.

This year, we have become important suppliers to some important customers. Especially in the second half of the year, I believe our market share will be further improved, and I hope this is a continuous process of improvement.

Large cylindrical batteries will be the mainstream route

Q: In the current entire field of power lithium batteries, competitive factors include technology, market resources, and supply chain resources. What kind of market pattern will these form in the future competitive relationship?

A: Nowadays, power lithium batteries require technology, high-level production and manufacturing, and strong supply chain support, especially this year's supply chain. Against the backdrop of the overlapping development of power lithium batteries and energy storage batteries, the supply chain appears somewhat difficult. So it has led to a rapid increase in prices, bringing new challenges to the operating companies of power lithium batteries.

But everyone will have a way to handle it and will also handle it. In the long run, I think technology remains the most important factor and capability in front of power lithium battery companies. As the scale of battery production and delivery expands, supply chain capacity will also become increasingly important.

Q: Now some battery companies are starting to layout energy storage, battery swapping, and other fields. Will these businesses become the standard equipment for battery companies' next development?

A: Essentially, both power and energy storage batteries are chemical energy storage devices that are indistinguishable in principle. For Yiwei Lithium Energy, we are actually starting a second venture in power lithium batteries based on the platform of past consumer batteries.

After 7 years of development, our power lithium batteries and energy storage batteries have developed a good asset structure, and the entire consumer battery sector has also grown relatively well. We have also become a comprehensive solution company for both consumer batteries and power lithium batteries.

Q: Last year, Yiwei Lithium Energy launched the construction of the Large Cylinder Project. How do you view the technological development trend of future power lithium batteries?

A: From the perspective of absolute safety, a large cylindrical ternary battery is undoubtedly the best choice. The design with battery cells can ensure that this battery will not have thermal diffusion and the system's safety.

From a mainstream perspective, large cylindrical batteries will be the mainstream route, while square lithium iron phosphate batteries will become the mainstream technology route in popular car models. Firstly, there is a large cylindrical battery, which is designed with battery cells to ensure that there is no thermal diffusion and it has system safety.

The square lithium iron phosphate battery is more reasonable in terms of its internal electrochemical structure, and the safety of the battery is also well guaranteed. Considering the comprehensive factors, the battery direction in the future (we prefer) cylindrical battery and laminated lithium iron phosphate battery.

Q: Recently, talent in the battery industry has been relatively scarce, and many companies are hiring at high salaries. What is the talent reserve of Yiwei Lithium Energy?

A: The various talents accumulated in this industry in the past, including those in technology, engineering, and quality management, were insufficient. In the process of rapid development of the industry, talent shortage is a common phenomenon.

Some companies adopt a borrowing based approach, relying heavily on poaching people to support technology development, and there are still quite a few such companies in the industry. I believe that high salary recruitment or high salary recruitment will still exist for a long time, which is a significant feature of development.

The route taken by Yiwei Lithium Energy is mainly focused on training. Currently, the number of people in our research institute has exceeded 2000, and it is expected to reach a scale of 3000 by the end of this year.

Q: How do you see the current situation of lithium battery recycling in China?

From now on, battery recycling is an important issue because of its large scale. Recycling 20GWh of batteries can ideally extract 50000 tons of lithium carbonate, which is a significant project from a mining perspective. So battery recycling will become increasingly important and the scale will also become larger.

From a cost perspective, the A0 class model meets the needs of the public very well and is not expensive. If the residual value of battery recycling can be better utilized in the future, it means that the cost of use for consumers will be lower, which is also of great use for the industry.
