In order to ensure the supply and stable price of lithium resource products and promote the healthy development of new energy vehicles and power lithium battery industry, not long ago, the Department of Raw Materials Industry and the First Department of Equipment Industry of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, together with the Price Department of the National Development and Reform Commission, the Bureau of Price Supervision and Inspection of the Market Supervision Administration and the Bureau of Anti unfair competition, organized a symposium on the operation of the lithium industry and the price rise of upstream materials of power lithium batteries.

The meeting listened to the production, expansion and sales of key companies, analyzed the bottleneck problems faced by the current resource development and expansion of production and supply, and in view of the recent sharp rise in the price of lithium resources and lithium salt products, fully exchanged views on the price formation mechanism of lithium salt products, production and consumption, the impact on the power lithium battery industry, and policies and measures to ensure supply and price stability.

01 Self production+co sales breakthrough key core technology

As is well known, power lithium-ion batteries are almost equivalent to the heart of new energy vehicles. In order to prevent "heart disease", many car companies have actively implemented the layout of power lithium-ion batteries at the beginning of the electrification transformation, striving to improve their supply chain risk prevention capabilities.

As one of the few companies in the world that master both the core technology of car building and the core technology of power lithium battery, BYD has promoted the commercial use of lithium iron phosphate battery blade technology, and its new energy market share has risen significantly. In 2021, BYD alone achieved a total sales volume of over 590000 new energy vehicles, accounting for approximately 16% of the national new energy vehicle market.

Nowadays, BYD's power lithium batteries are not only self produced and sold, but can also be delivered to other car companies. It can be seen that companies that master key core technologies have a more stable upstream and downstream market in the supply chain. In addition, BYD is also promoting the separation and listing of its battery and semiconductor businesses, accelerating the comprehensive upgrading of its electrification, intelligence, and networking capabilities.

The latest data shows that in February 2022, the BYD Han family sold 9290 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 84.8%. Among them, the Han EV sold 8941 units with a cumulative sales volume exceeding 180000 units, firmly ranking first in the sales of pure electric mid to large sedans.

In addition, Great Wall Motor also insists on self production and co marketing. In 2016, Great Wall Motor invested and founded Honeycomb Energy, focusing on a series of research and development of materials, batteries and systems. Nowadays, with the support of multiple parties, Honeycomb Energy has begun to deliver bulk power lithium batteries. According to the latest data, in February 2022, Honeycomb Energy's ternary lithium battery was loaded with 0.25GWh, and lithium iron phosphate battery was loaded with 0.09GWh. The domestic power lithium battery company ranked sixth.

02 Cooperation+self research to enhance chemical risk prevention capabilities

Among all power lithium battery companies worldwide, CATL has created a miracle. In just a few years, CATL has signed supply contracts with many large car companies, including deep cooperation with some car companies to establish joint ventures. For example, SAIC Times and Times SAIC, GAC Times and Times GAC, Sichuan Times and Times Geely, and other cases.

The latest data shows that in February 2022, CATL ranked first among domestic power lithium battery companies in terms of vehicle installation, accounting for 48.02%; BYD ranks second, accounting for 21.24%; Zhongxin Navigation Station ranks third, accounting for 8.44%; Guoxuan High Tech ranked fourth, accounting for 5.14%; LG New Energy ranks fifth, accounting for 2.59%.

Objectively speaking, the cost of power lithium-ion batteries accounts for about half of the cost of pure electric vehicles, and profits are taken away by power lithium-ion battery companies. Car companies are not willing to become assembly foundries and want to "take the initiative in their own hands". Taking GAC as an example, although there is good cooperation between GAC and CATL, GAC has never given up on technology self research.

In 2021, GAC Aian independently developed three original battery technologies - magazine battery system safety technology, sponge silicon negative electrode battery technology, and ultra fast charging battery technology. Among them, the magazine battery successfully completed the puncture experiment, overturning the traditional perception that ternary lithium batteries are "not too safe". The models under GAC Aian are selling well, ranking third in total sales of new energy vehicles in 2021.

On March 10th of this year, GAC Aian once again announced the official commencement of the self developed battery pilot line project. In the eyes of industry insiders, this marks that Aian's independent battery cell industrialization will have four major capabilities: firstly, from less to more, to verify the scale production and manufacturing technology capabilities; The second is technological breakthroughs, developing advanced manufacturing processes and equipment capabilities; The third is product supply and the ability to manufacture products for batch validation; The fourth is iterative empowerment, which cultivates and exercises the manufacturing and quality control capabilities of large-scale production.

03 Holdings+Joint Venture to Fill the Battery Demand Gap

On March 21st, Volkswagen Group (China) announced the establishment of joint ventures with Huayou Cobalt and Qingshan Group in Indonesia and Guangxi respectively, in order to further consolidate its position in the domestic battery value chain.

Among them, the planned Indonesian joint venture company can meet the total production of nickel and cobalt raw materials required by 160GWh after full production; The Guangxi joint venture company proposed to be established with Huayou Cobalt Industry will specialize in refining nickel cobalt sulfate, precursor processing, and production of positive electrode materials to assist Volkswagen in further optimizing battery costs.

Prior to this supply chain optimization, Volkswagen became the largest shareholder of Guoxuan High Tech by controlling Guoxuan High Tech. The reporter learned that in March this year, Volkswagen had already sent a letter of appointment to Guoxuan High tech standard battery cells, with lithium iron phosphate and ternary standard battery cells being appointed successively.

As the only battery company that holds shares and has issued a designated letter, Guoxuan High tech is expected to fully unleash its energy. At the same time, Volkswagen has set a goal of doubling the sales of new energy vehicles this year, which means that the gap in Volkswagen's lithium-ion power batteries is still significant. Next, it is not ruled out that Volkswagen may take more measures to stabilize the supply of raw materials such as cobalt, nickel, and lithium.
