Recently, TSLA released the '2020 Impact Report', which stated that 'waste batteries have been 100% recycled and no batteries have been sent to landfills'.
Regarding this, Kyle Wiens, CEO of IFixit, a foreign professional dismantling agency, stated that no modern battery can be 100% recycled, and at least adhesives and sealants are non recyclable materials. Although the battery recycling industry is undergoing innovation, achieving 100% recyclability requires a significant amount of research and development.

It is understood that although TSLA has been collaborating with third-party battery recyclers for many years to ensure that batteries are not buried, TSLA still attaches importance to establishing recycling capabilities internally.
According to the 2020 Impact Report, TSLA installed an initial battery recycling facility at the Nevada Superplant in the fourth quarter of 2020. With third-party battery recycling manufacturers, TSLA recovered a total of 1300 tons of nickel, 400 tons of copper, and 80 tons of cobalt throughout 2020.
However, currently, most of the batteries recycled by TSLA come from research and development and quality control processes, and the number of recycled batteries from the consumption process is very small, and the vast majority are concentrated in vehicles with extremely high usage rates such as taxis. The performance of batteries deployed in TSLA cars and Powerwalls remains strong and has not yet entered the recycling process.
Due to TSLA's significant increase in sales over the past three years, it is expected that the number of batteries to be recycled will also increase significantly in the future. TSLA plans to install battery recycling facilities in every super factory.
Analysis shows that "a 20g mobile phone battery can pollute one square kilometer of land for about 50 years, and larger and heavier electric vehicle power lithium batteries contain heavy metal elements such as nickel, cobalt, and manganese. Improper handling may pose a greater threat to the ecological environment
At present, based on the 5-8 year service life of automotive power lithium batteries, batteries put into production and launched in 2014 and 2015 will enter a mass scrap period in 2020.
Data shows that in 2019, the global cumulative recovery of power lithium batteries was about 120000 tons, and in 2020, China's recovery of power lithium batteries was about 26.69 GWh (about 200000 tons). Industry estimates that by 2025, there will be 110GWh (approximately 800000 tons) of power lithium batteries to be recycled.
From this perspective, the issue of battery recycling is indeed urgent, and companies in the global new energy industry chain have an unshirkable responsibility.
In China, the recycling of power lithium batteries has risen to the national level. Last month, the State Council issued the "14th Five Year Plan for the Development of Circular Economy", which mentioned strengthening the construction of a traceability management platform for new energy vehicle power lithium batteries and improving the traceability management system for power lithium battery recycling and utilization.

The second batch includes 22 companies including Tianjin Yinlong New Energy Co., Ltd., Shanghai BYD Co., Ltd., and Greenway (Wuxi) Energy Materials Co., Ltd. Among them, 9 companies are engaged in recycling and 14 companies are engaged in cascade utilization.
