On August 3rd, according to South Korean technology media TheElec, insiders revealed that Samsung SDI has received an order from Volkswagen to produce a "Unified Prismatic Cell" for it.

At the first "PowerDay" of the Volkswagen Group held on March 15th this year, Volkswagen proposed the Unifiedcell (Standard Cell), which is planned to be launched in 2023 and will cover 80% of the electric vehicle models under the Volkswagen Group by 2030. By then, for entry-level electric vehicles, battery costs will be reduced by 50%.

It should be pointed out that the standard cell proposed by Volkswagen will use square cells, which means Samsung SDI will produce standard cells for Volkswagen.

It is reported that Volkswagen may hand over the standard battery specifications and functional plans to Samsung SDI for design and manufacturing. This means that Samsung SDI may not only be a contract manufacturer, but also participate in design and manufacturing.

If the above news is true, Samsung SDI will become the second battery company to participate in the production of Volkswagen standard cells after Guoxuan High Tech. On July 20th, Volkswagen has signed an agreement with Hefei Guoxuan, which will invest in the construction of a Volkswagen standard battery cell project with an annual output of 20GWh in the Hefei New Station High tech Zone. The project is expected to cover an area of 500 acres. The project will be planned and implemented in stages, with the first phase of 10GWh planned to be completed and put into operation 18 months from the start of construction.

Signing a battery supply agreement with a partner is one of the steps in Volkswagen's electrification transformation. On July 13th, Volkswagen Group announced its 2030 NEWAUTO strategy, which aims to accelerate its transformation into a software driven mobile travel service provider.

In terms of battery supply, Volkswagen stated that it plans to establish a self-control battery supply chain by establishing new partnerships and covering all areas from raw materials to recycling.

To achieve this goal, Volkswagen is developing standard batteries that reduce costs by 50% and plans to use them in 80% of the group's vehicles by 2030. Meanwhile, by 2030, Volkswagen's total planned production capacity of six battery factories in Europe is 240GWh.

The first factory is located in Sherevteo, Sweden, and will be operated by NorthvoltAB company. Volkswagen recently invested an additional 500 million euros in it and started production with Northvolt in 2023.

The second factory is located in Salzgit, Germany, and will collaborate with Guoxuan High Tech to develop standard battery cells, with plans to start mass production from 2025.

The third factory is located in Spain, and Volkswagen has confirmed that it will establish a super battery factory locally with its strategic partners, with plans to achieve an annual production capacity of 40GWh by 2030.
