Australian start-up Allegro Energy invented a micro lotion battery electrolyte, which is 100 times cheaper than the current price, easy to produce and non-toxic.

In April of this year, Nann, the dean of the School of Mathematics and Physical Sciences at the University of Newcastle, and two of his students, Fraser? Fraser Hughson and Arhat? Rohan Borah co founded AllegroEnergy. The startup tried to commercialize its micro lotion battery electrolyte. Although its component is water, it has overcome the voltage limit that usually blocks water-based electrolyte.

Battery electrolytes are usually divided into water-based electrolytes and organic electrolytes, but both forms have drawbacks. Organic electrolyte has good electrochemical stability, but it is expensive and toxic. Water-based electrolytes can only maintain stability at a voltage of 1.23V, at which point water will split into independent hydrogen and oxygen molecules.

So Professor Nann decided to manufacture an electrolyte containing both water and solvent in the form of micro lotion. Of course, microemulsions are not as simple as adding detergent and oil to water. On the contrary, it is a combination of water molecules and hydrophobic liquids, combined with a surfactant, that binds these two usually mutually exclusive solvents. Basically, this combination occurs at the "micro" level, is indivisible, and is thermodynamically stable. This electrolyte can overcome the obstacle that water-based electrolytes can only maintain stability at a voltage of 1.23V.

70% of the price of supercapacitors is attributed to the cost of their electrolytes. Professor Nann said, "Currently, the cost of a liter or kilogram of electrolyte is about $10, while our cost is 10 cents. Therefore, its cost is 100 times cheaper

The electrolytes currently used in supercapacitors are very sensitive to air, so they need to protect the atmosphere during the manufacturing process. Professor Nann added, "Our product does not protect the atmosphere, which is a huge advantage in manufacturing and the cost is much lower. We also made some estimates of the carbon footprint of manufacturing our supercapacitors, and by simply not protecting the atmosphere, we saved about 70% of carbon dioxide
