According to the Daily Mail on May 8th, scientists have developed a new type of fuel cell that can provide power for hybrid vehicles while driving, rather than relying on gasoline or diesel engines. Currently, fuel cells are not used in hybrid vehicles due to their high cost, but a new improved design means that the lifespan of fuel cells is at least 10 times longer than the current version.

Scientists from Canadian universities hope to increase the durability of batteries (their lifespan) and enable newly designed fuel cells to enter the market. Fuel cells generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, with water being their only byproduct. Electric hybrid vehicles currently use two types of energy sources - gas engines and batteries, as the combination of these two sources solves problems such as limited range when charging batteries and long-term dependence on battery charging.

The function of a gas engine is to charge the battery while the car is in motion. At low speeds, hybrid vehicles use pure electricity and can switch to gasoline when accelerating. The emissions of cars driven by this combination are lower than those of regular gasoline cars.

Researchers have made progress in changing the way fuel packages transport energy to battery packs. By providing a constant rather than fluctuating amount of electricity, scientists have found that the time spent switching between switch states has decreased. Therefore, the battery life of fuel cells has been extended by 4.9 to 11.8 times, depending on the terrain of the vehicle. The extension of battery life means that the cost of fuel cells is expected to decrease, making their prices more affordable.

Professor Li Xianguo, Director of the University Fuel Cell and Green Energy Laboratory, said, "According to our design method, the cost will be close to gasoline engines, or even cheaper. Fuel cells have great prospects and will be a clean energy that will flourish in the future." Professor Li said that he has found a method that can not only reduce costs but also meet the expected durability and performance of batteries. He added: "In addition to achieving the goal of making fuel cells more affordable, we also ensure that zero emissions are achieved in the transportation applications of the cells. This is a good start. Fuel cells are a transitional solution to the problem of internal combustion engines and their serious damage to the natural environment." Professor Li hopes that fuel cells used in hybrid vehicles can expand production scale and reduce Unit cost.

According to the research team, fuel cells are not necessarily limited to hybrid vehicles, but can also provide cheaper, safer, reliable, and cleaner sources of electricity for batteries and gasoline hybrid electric vehicles.
