On the 14th, the reporter learned from Xi'an Jiaotong University that Professor He Gang's research group at the Institute of Advanced Science and Technology of the university has successfully prepared sulfur-containing element viologen polymers and applied them as electrode materials in organic free radical lithium-ion batteries. The research results were recently published in the form of a paper in the German Journal of Applied Chemistry. Violin compounds are cationic organic molecules with excellent redox properties. Under applied voltage or light conditions, it can undergo two reversible steps of single electron oxidation-reduction to generate free radical cation states and neutral molecular states, accompanied by significant color changes. Its unique redox properties make it widely used in the field of energy storage materials, such as inorganic/organic lithium/sodium/magnesium ion batteries, aqueous organic flow batteries, organic free radical batteries, and lithium-oxygen batteries.

Organic free radical batteries, as a new type of energy storage device, have advantages such as no rare metals, adjustable redox properties, and flexible design at the molecular level. However, these types of batteries also have defects such as low redox states, low capacity, and poor stability, greatly limiting their applications.

Professor He Gang's team from Xi'an Jiaotong University has conducted research on the relevant mechanisms, indicating that the introduction of tellurium atoms greatly improves the conductivity of electrode materials and increases lithiation sites. On this basis, they combined the electrochromic properties of tellurium containing viologen polymers with battery applications to prepare a new type of flexible color changing battery, which undergoes significant color changes during the charging and discharging process of the battery.
