Currently, most of the battery manufacturing capacity being constructed or planned in Europe comes from China and other Asian manufacturers.

For example, Chinese battery manufacturer Ningde Times New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has signed an electric vehicle supply agreement with German automakers BMW (bMW) and Volkswagen (Volkswagen), and is investing in a battery factory in Germany with an annual production capacity of 14GWh.

Another Chinese battery manufacturer, Honeycomb Energy Technology Co., Ltd., plans to establish a battery processing base in Europe by 2025 with an annual processing capacity of 24GWh.

In other aspects, Korean manufacturers including LG Chemical, Samsung SDI, and SKInnovation are also planning to expand their battery processing business in Europe.

The new South Korean company entering the European battery market is automotive manufacturer InziControls, which recently announced the supply of $5.6 million to the Hungarian government for a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant that will open and operate in Hungary in 2020.

These companies' active investment plans have forced EU leaders to seek measures and methods to cultivate their local battery industry, hoping that the European automotive industry will not rely on Asian battery giants.

In a report released in April, the European Commission warned that "the EU's high reliance on battery imports may expose the European automotive industry to high costs and risks in the supply chain, and weaken its competitiveness with foreign competitors

Germany and France have taken action to prevent this threat and established the European Battery Union, which is tasked with directing investment in the battery manufacturing value chain, which will reach 100 billion euros (113 billion US dollars). The European Battery Union aims to establish 15 to 25 Gigafactory factories for processing lithium-ion batteries, but its statement does not explicitly indicate whether it includes battery factories invested by Asian manufacturers in Europe. At present, there are still very few lithium-ion battery manufacturing factories invested and constructed by European countries.

Last month, Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt announced that it had completed a $1 billion equity financing to build the first large-scale lithium-ion battery Gigafactory processing plant in Europe.

Subsequently, EITInnoEnergy, an investor supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, announced an investment of 7.25 million euros (8.16 million US dollars) to build a battery processing plant with an annual production capacity of 32GWh in Norway.
