The working principle of methanol fuel powered lithium-ion batteries

The direct methanol fuel power lithium ion battery is a variant of the Proton-exchange membrane fuel power lithium ion battery. It uses methanol directly without pre reforming. Methanol is converted into carbon dioxide, protons (hydrogen nuclei or hydrogen ions) and electrons at the anode. Like a standard Proton-exchange membrane fuel power lithium ion battery, protons migrate through the Proton-exchange membrane and react with oxygen at the cathode, while electrons reach the anode through the load of the external circuit and do work.

Alkaline conditions

At the negative electrode: 2CH3OH+16 (OH -) -12 (e–)&arr; 2 (CO32-)+12 (H2O)

At the positive electrode: 3O2+12 (e–)+6 (H2O)&arr; 12 (OH -)

Total reaction formula: 2CH3OH+3O2+4 (OH -)=2 (CO32-)+6H2O

Acidic conditions

At the negative electrode: 2 (CH3OH) -12 (e–)+2H2O→ 12H++2CO2

At the positive electrode: 3O2+12 (e -)+12H+→ 6H2O

Total reaction formula: 2CH3OH+3O2=4H2O+2CO2
