At present, Chinese automobile manufacturers have applied to the government for subsidies for five electric vehicles equipped with LG Chem and Samsung SDI batteries. As confirmed by the South Korean technology media "etnews", the application is in the early certification stage. In fact, after China launched the "Thad retaliation" measure against South Korea in 2016, the subsidies generated differential treatment. Therefore, the outside world is concerned about whether the Korean battery enterprises that were banned for two years can make a comeback.

According to the "etnews", the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently released the "318th Quality Certification Preliminary Announcement", there are five electric vehicles equipped with LG Chem and Samsung SDI batteries, including four pure electric vehicles equipped with LG Chem batteries by Dongfeng Renault, a cooperative company of Dongfeng Motor Group, while Jinkang New Energy Vehicle has a pure electric vehicle equipped with Samsung SDI cylindrical batteries.

The subsidy for electric vehicles in China is mainly through the announcement of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to solicit opinions, and also to publicly determine the list for review. If the electric vehicles can successfully pass the quality certification, they will be announced separately and receive subsidies.

Although the electric vehicles with Korean batteries are successfully included in the list, it does not mean that China completely removes the differential treatment of Korean batteries, but it can gradually feel the change of the environmental atmosphere. In May last year, Beijing Benz equipped with SKInnovation batteries passed the quality certification, but was not included in the subsidy target; While Dongfeng Renault and Dongfeng Yueda Kia hybrid vehicles equipped with LG chemical batteries tried to apply for certification, but they were rejected. In particular, not only foreign enterprises but also electric vehicles produced by Chinese manufacturers are excluded from the rejected models. Therefore, the Power Battery Application Branch under the China Chemical and Physical Power Supply Industry Association also said that LG Chemical and Samsung SDI had made a comeback.

Since 2016, in order to support local enterprises and retaliate against the Thad incident in South Korea, the Chinese government has not subsidized electric vehicles equipped with Korean made batteries, making LG Chemical, Samsung SDI, SKInnovation and other Korean battery enterprises suffer. It is believed that as China's electric vehicle subsidy system will be abolished after 2020, foreign enterprises will be likely to have fair competition. Korean enterprises have also started to strengthen investment in China and actively cooperate with local automobile manufacturers.

According to Jin Bingzhu, executive of SNER Research, China's electric vehicle market accounts for 34% of the global market. As Korean enterprises continue to try in China, they are now beginning to get some results and expect to expand their sales to China.
