LG Chemistry and SKI started in 2019. In April 2019, LG Chemical filed a complaint with ITC accusing SKI of infringing on its trade secrets and hiring over 100 former LG employees, including 70 important engineers, prior to the divestment of its battery division.

SKI denied this accusation, sparking a patent war in South Korea and the United States, accusing each other of their respective lithium-ion battery patents.

In February 2020, ITC made a preliminary ruling that SKI intentionally destroyed evidence records after LG Chemical filed a trade secret, maliciously obstructing the investigation, and made a breach of contract judgment against SKI.
