Shenhua Group is a super large energy enterprise based on coal, integrating power, railway, port, shipping, coal to liquids and coal chemical industry, and integrating production, transportation and marketing. Huang Qing, secretary of the board of directors of Shenhua, said: "We are particularly interested in hydrogen energy. If the future fuel cell can make a big breakthrough, the cost of hydrogen production from coal is the lowest."

In fact, Shenhua Group has done a lot of work around hydrogen energy. The company has participated in the formulation of the national hydrogen energy industry roadmap, including the roadmap for energy conservation and new energy vehicle technology, the blue book on the development of China's hydrogen energy industry infrastructure, and the guidance on accelerating the development of the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle industry.

On August 20, 2006, the gasification furnace of Shenhua coal hydrogen production unit was successfully hoisted.

On August 28, 2016, Shenhua Group built a hydrogenation station in Rugao, Jiangsu Province. The hydrogen storage capacity of the station is 980kg, and the daily hydrogenation capacity is about 2000kg. The project includes two hydrogen long tube trailer parking spaces and unloading devices, one set of 5.76m3 fixed hydrogen storage cylinder group, four sets of 500Nm3/h hydrogen compressor units, supporting station buildings of the hydrogen refueling station, supporting electrical equipment, instruments, water supply and drainage in the station area, and fire fighting.

In addition, Shenhua Group is also investing in hydrogen energy projects in Xianyang, Shaanxi, Baotou, Inner Mongolia and other places. It plans to build a hydrogen corridor with points and lines, forming an industrial strategic layout in the east, west, north and south.

At present, the lowest hydrogen production cost of Shenhua Group is 0.77 yuan/m3, 0.87 yuan/kg, which is much lower than the international average hydrogen production cost.

At present, Shenhua Group's coal chemical industry has an annual output of more than 4 million tons of hydrogen and a hydrogen production capacity of 40 million fuel cell vehicles, ranking first in the world. The cost of the hydrogen production route from coal explored is 70% to 80% of that from natural gas and 60% to 70% of that from heavy oil or naphtha.

Ling Wen, general manager of Shenhua Group, said that the commercialization of hydrogen energy industry is accelerating. However, compared with developed countries, China still has a long way to go in terms of fuel cell technology development and hydrogen energy industry equipment manufacturing.
