Recently, in an interview with a reporter, Wei Lande, President and CEO of BMW Brilliance Automotive Co., Ltd., told about the cooperation between BMW Brilliance and Ningde Times.

In the supplier list of BMW Brilliance, Ningde Times is a very special name. This is not only because it is often regarded as the "unicorn" of domestic power battery enterprises, but also because of BMW Brilliance's deep participation in its development process, the two have formed countless ties.

In fact, not only in the Ningde era, the relationship between BMW Brilliance and other suppliers is also close, rather than staying at the level of daily supply and quality control. In Wei Lande's view, the benign relationship between BMW Brilliance and its suppliers, especially local suppliers, is an important driving force for the company's development in the past 15 years.

The intention to participate in Ningde Times is based on the consideration of cell technology

From supplying power battery to participating in the construction of power battery center, the cooperation between Ningde Times and BMW Brilliance has started many years ago. Since this year, the cooperation between the two sides has been upgraded again.

On July 17, Ningde Times, which had just been listed on A-share market, announced that BMW Brilliance would purchase the battery capacity construction project from Ningde Times at a price of 815 million yuan, and pay an additional initial advance of 2.853 billion yuan to the company to purchase power battery products of designated models in the future.

The announcement also said that Ningde Times agreed that BMW Brilliance has the right to make equity investment in the company when it subsequently implements domestic or overseas equity financing (such as the company's non-public A-share or H-share IPO), with an investment ceiling of 2.853 billion yuan.

It can be seen from the announcement that this cooperation between the two parties is not only limited to the purchase of parts with a large amount of money, but it is likely that BMW Brilliance will also take action on the equity of Ningde Times in the future.

With the rapid development of China's new energy automobile industry, Ningde Times has become the leading enterprise in the domestic power battery industry, and the partners have long been more than BMW Brilliance, such as BAIC, SAIC, Chang'an and other automobile enterprises. According to analysis, this time Ningde Times opened its equity to BMW Brilliance, mainly because BMW Brilliance hopes to occupy a dominant position among the expanding partners of Ningde Times.

Wei Lande denied this statement. In his opinion, BMW Brilliance is most concerned about not whether there is enough supply of battery cells in Ningde Times, but the technology that the company has mastered in battery cell innovation. "BMW Brilliance hopes to establish a strategic partnership with Ningde Times to master this technology at the first time."

Wei Lande told the reporter that at the initial stage of cooperation with Ningde Times, BMW Brilliance experts and Ningde Times technicians established a joint development team to jointly interpret the production standards of power batteries and establish technological processes.

This kind of deep cooperation at the technical level has played a key role in the future development of new energy vehicles of BMW Brilliance. It is understood that in the subsequent construction of the power battery center of BMW Brilliance, Ningde Times also sent technical experts to support it, ensuring the smooth operation of the center.

75% of product value is created by suppliers

In fact, the cooperation with Ningde Times is not an exception. In BMW Brilliance's development philosophy, establishing a mutually beneficial and win-win relationship with local suppliers is not only an important means to promote BMW's localization strategy in China, but also an important guarantee for BMW Brilliance's rapid development.

At present, BMW Brilliance has 359 local parts suppliers in the Chinese market, including 84 from Liaoning. In 2017, BMW Brilliance's local procurement reached 26.7 billion yuan, an increase of about 49% over 2013. In Wei Lande's opinion, this achievement comes from the good technical cooperation between BMW Brilliance and its suppliers.

Like the cooperation with Ningde Times, BMW Brilliance is deeply bound to suppliers in terms of technology. Cao Kebo, chairman and general manager of Jiangnan Moulding Technology Co., Ltd., told reporters that BMW will have a dedicated technical team to support suppliers and help them improve. For example, in terms of lean production, during the cooperation between Shenyang Minghua Molding Technology Co., Ltd. (a subsidiary of Jiangnan Molding Technology Co., Ltd.) and BMW Brilliance, the productivity increased by 40% - 60%. In addition, BMW Brilliance will work with suppliers to promote sustainable development in the whole industry chain, including the audit and screening of sub suppliers.

"Additional" assistance to suppliers means greater investment in manpower and material resources, which is one of the reasons why many multinational auto enterprises have been slow to promote their localization strategy. However, in BMW Brilliance's view, as the "return" provided by Ningde Times for its development at present, the investment in suppliers is worthwhile.

Wei Lande believes that 75% of the value of products produced by BMW Brilliance is created by suppliers. "BMW Brilliance has always believed that the success of the entire supplier network and even BMW Brilliance can only be guaranteed if we create a win-win, common growth and development situation with suppliers. We will continue to adhere to this principle in the course of future development."
