On February 1st, according to foreign media reports, Tesla is expanding its battery factory in Sparks, Nevada to bring cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supply chains to the United States.

It is reported that Tesla will purchase idle equipment from its Chinese supplier CATL (300750) to produce batteries, with an initial production capacity of approximately 10GWh.

According to the report, Tesla will have 100% control over the factory and fully bear its construction costs. Ningde Times personnel will not participate in it except for helping with equipment debugging.

Public information shows that CATL is Tesla's battery supplier and has been supplying to Tesla since July 2020. In 2021, Tesla became Ningde Times' largest customer for the first time, purchasing a total of 13 billion yuan in lithium batteries that year, accounting for 10% of Ningde Times' total revenue. In 2022, CATL's lithium battery sales revenue from Tesla was 38 billion yuan, accounting for 11.59% of the total revenue.

In addition to Tesla, as early as February 2023, Ford officially announced an investment of $3.5 billion to build a lithium iron phosphate battery factory in Marshall, Michigan, USA. This is the first battery factory in the United States wholly owned by an automobile manufacturer, which will introduce a lithium iron phosphate battery solution for Ford's electric vehicle products. The new factory is named "Michigan BlueOval Battery Industry Park" and is fully owned by Ford. It is expected to start production in 2026 and has an initial workforce of 2500 people. The initial design annual production capacity is about 35GWh, which can provide power battery packs for approximately 400000 Ford electric vehicles annually.

As part of the plan, Ford has reached a new agreement with battery manufacturer CATL. According to this agreement, CATL will provide technical and service support for the production of Ford's lithium iron phosphate battery factory.

In early January of this year, a Ford spokesperson stated that Ford Motor Company did not see any content in the IRA Act (US Inflation Reduction Act) and guidelines that excluded our technology licensing cooperation with Chinese battery manufacturer CATL from being eligible for subsidies. This means that the technical cooperation between CATL and Ford Motor Company has not been excluded from the subsidy of the IRA Act, which has come into effect under the new regulations.

Subsequently, Zeng Yuqun, Chairman of CATL, also stated at the 2024 Davos Forum that CATL and Ford have established a good cooperation model. CATL adopts a technology licensing service model to help Ford build its own battery factory.

Zeng Yuqun also mentioned, "We will provide similar service models to many car manufacturers and even battery manufacturers in Europe and the United States, helping them quickly start battery production bases and become world-class factories to address climate change, which is our goal."
