Currently, the domestic competition in the field of new energy batteries has become increasingly fierce. With the slowdown in downstream demand market growth, the overseas market, which is accelerating its electrification transformation, has become a must compete place for Chinese enterprises to seek greater development.

However, recently, foreign media reported that the news of the US Congress banning the Pentagon from purchasing batteries from six Chinese companies has continued to ferment. Although it was ultimately confirmed to be a re dissemination of old news, the substance has no impact on Chinese battery companies, but it has also made the overseas development of Chinese battery new energy companies a focus of the industry once again.

It is undeniable that since last year, the successive implementation of new regulations such as the EU's New Battery Act and the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), as well as the signing of multiple negative provisions related to China in the US's 2024 Fiscal Year Defense Authorization Act, have imposed certain restrictions on China's export of new energy batteries. However, in the eyes of industry insiders, China's dominant position in the global battery supply chain has made it almost impossible for it to be excluded. At the same time, Battery Network has found that as we enter 2024, Chinese battery new energy industry chain enterprises continue to gain recognition from their international circle of friends, with continuous orders. At the same time, their overseas layout is also continuously advancing.

Continuous gains from large and long orders

Based on the recent overseas orders in the battery field, Kelu Electronics USA has signed a purchase order for battery energy storage systems with Stella Energy Solutions Co., Ltd. to sell approximately 480MWh of containerized battery energy storage systems and 200MW of PCSSkid (box type energy storage medium voltage converter) to the customer; BYD has reached a supply agreement with Spanish renewable energy producer Grenergy for a 1.1GWh energy storage system, which will be used for the first and second phases of the latter's million dollar investment project; Haichen Energy Storage has officially signed a 5GWh energy storage battery framework procurement cooperation agreement with Powin, a global energy storage system integrator in the United States. In the next three years, Haichen Energy Storage will provide Powin with the agreed energy storage capacity based on independently developed 300Ah electric energy storage specialized battery products.

Battery Network has found that some of the above orders are deepening cooperation based on existing cooperation, while others are recognized by "new friends".

Among them, Kelu Electronics revealed that in the past three years, the total scale of energy storage system supply orders signed between the company and Stella Energy Solutions Co., Ltd. was 3.5MW/15.8MWh. If the newly signed order can be fulfilled smoothly, it will strengthen the long-term partnership between the two sides in the field of new energy, and lay a solid foundation for more comprehensive and in-depth cooperation in the future.

Haichen Energy Storage also introduced that the company has close cooperation with Powin. The two sides signed the first agreement in early 2023, reaching a procurement cooperation for at least 1.5GWh energy storage battery products. This latest agreement will further consolidate the foundation of cooperation between both parties and jointly promote the implementation of future 5GWh project applications.

Unlike the two companies mentioned above, Guo Bin, Overseas Sales Director of BYD Energy Storage, said, "Collaborating with global companies like Greenergy on the Oasisi de Atacama project in Chile is a new milestone for BYD Energy Storage in its current business landscape, with the company currently operating in over 70 countries."

In addition, in addition to orders in the battery field, three battery material suppliers in China also received large orders from well-known overseas enterprises in early 2024. Among them, Defu Technology signed an agreement with a wholly-owned subsidiary of a leading German vehicle manufacturer, a power battery company, to supply lithium battery copper foil products to it; Shengxin Lithium Energy and Ganfeng Lithium have successively obtained long-term orders for modern automotive lithium hydroxide.

Continuous promotion of overseas layout

Entering 2024, the overseas layout of battery new energy industry chain enterprises is also continuously advancing, with both production bases continuously landing and high-quality targets in the industry chain enterprises.

Among them, after the top battery enterprise Yiwei Lithium Energy laid out its industrial bases in Malaysia, Hungary, Thailand and the United States, the company announced again on January 12, 2024 that the company's subsidiary Yiwei Power and Aksa planned to jointly establish a joint venture in Türkiye, aiming to engage in the production, marketing and sales of battery modules, outdoor cabinets and containers, and implement energy storage system projects in Türkiye (local) as the general contractor of the project.

On the same day, Chen Lizhi, Chairman of Nord Group, and Alexander de Kroc, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium, held talks in Beijing to discuss Nord Group's investment in the construction of a production base in Walloon, Belgium. According to Nord Group's previous announcement, the company plans to invest in establishing a production base in the state of Walloon, Belgium, Europe. The first phase of the project plans to invest and construct an annual production capacity of 30000 tons of lithium copper foil, 1 million pieces of FDC1, and 1 million pieces of PI heating film. The total investment of the project is expected to be 500 million euros.

In addition, Ganfeng Lithium and BYD also plan to expand their overseas lithium resource rights through acquisitions.

Specifically, Ganfeng Lithium plans to hold no more than 5% equity in Mali Lithium, with the ultimate goal of holding no more than 60% equity in Mali Lithium, and indirectly holding no more than 60% equity in the lithium pyroxene Goulamina project located in Mali.

According to foreign media reports, BYD has discussed supply agreements, joint ventures, or acquisitions with lithium mining developer Sigma Lithium. It is worth mentioning that the subsidiary of the enterprise owns the development rights of the Grota do Cirillo lithium mine. Previously, Tesla, CATL, and Volkswagen all intended to acquire Sigma Lithium.

The resilience of going out to sea is gradually increasing

Whether it is the continuous expansion of downstream friend circles or the in-depth promotion of industrial layout, it cannot be separated from the unremitting efforts of China's battery new energy industry chain enterprises in the early stage of going abroad. Yu Qingjiao, Secretary General of the Zhongguancun New Battery Technology Innovation Alliance and Chairman of the Battery Hundred People Association, stated that in 2023, Chinese companies in the field of power batteries will enter a harvest period of overseas expansion.

From the perspective of overseas project dynamics, in 2023, many of China's top battery companies have gradually entered a substantial stage of overseas expansion projects: Ningde Times Germany's Thuringia battery factory has entered production, officially supplying customers in Europe and surrounding areas; The first phase of Guoxuan High tech's Gottingen factory in Germany, Fremont factory in the United States, and joint venture factory in Thailand are gradually put into operation and offline; Honeycomb Energy's Thailand factory has also entered the product offline stage; SAIC Zhengda Electric Vehicle Battery Factory, also located in Thailand, is also entering production

At the same time, in the field of battery materials, the Indonesian Huafei Materials project jointly developed by Huayou Cobalt, Yongrui Holdings, and Yiwei Asia is also put into operation in 2023; The battery grade nickel sulfate project of Liqin Resources, which is also investing in projects in Indonesia, has also entered mass production; The electrolyte projects laid out by Xinzhoubang and Ruitai New Materials in Poland have also been announced for production; Hungary's first product line of Enjie is officially connected

According to the latest data released by the General Administration of Customs, in 2023, China's total exports of "new three types" products such as electric passenger vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, and solar cells reached 1.06 trillion yuan, breaking the trillion yuan mark for the first time, with a growth rate of 29.9%.

In 2023, the cumulative export of power and other batteries in China reached 152.6 GWh, accounting for 20.9% of the cumulative sales in the first 12 months. Among them, the cumulative export of power batteries was 127.4 GWh, accounting for 83.5%, with a cumulative year-on-year increase of 87.1%; The cumulative export of other batteries is 25.2 GWh, accounting for 16.5%.

Behind the sets of data, there is strong evidence that China's battery new energy industry chain has strengthened its resilience in going global.

Based on the predictions of various institutions, with the continuous deepening of cooperation with overseas customers and the continuous promotion of industrial layout, China's battery new energy industry chain will continue the significant growth trend of 2023 and reach a new level in terms of exports and overseas layout in 2024.
