According to foreign media reports, Estonian start-up Skeleton Technologies is developing a graphene enhanced SuperBattery, which can be fully charged in 15 seconds and will not deteriorate after hundreds of thousands of charge-discharge cycles. Skeleton's graphene battery is expected to help fill the gap that lithium battery or hydrogen fuel power battery still cannot meet the energy demand, and the company announced that it has completed the research and development work in cooperation with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Electric vehicles will be a key use case of the battery, because the long charging time is still one of the most troublesome problems for electric vehicle owners.

In addition, lithium batteries will deteriorate over time and their service life will be limited. The warranty period of electric vehicles can also explain this problem. For this reason, the automotive industry has been developing batteries that can overcome the above problems. Supercapacitors can store charges in the electric field and release charges without chemical reaction, which is considered to be a feasible solution. In addition, the charging speed of the supercapacitor is fast, which can provide powerful power for the car. However, such devices have a big disadvantage: they cannot store energy for a long time, because they cannot be used for long-distance bus travel.

However, Skeleton combined some elements of supercapacitors with lithium batteries to achieve both effects and made a very attractive solution. Madiberk said: We have studied the dry electrode route being explored by TSLA, but we decided to take another route. TSLA seeks to maximize energy capacity, while we seek the most efficient way to obtain electricity.

Skeleton's super battery combines the way that supercapacitors store charge in the electric field with a small amount of wet chemical reaction to make the battery store energy for a longer time.

Madiberk said that this kind of battery was designed to be used in combination with lithium battery and even hydrogen fuel power battery. Our battery is not a complete solution, and can't make the long-life electric vehicle run completely on our technology. But combining the super battery and lithium battery can reduce the charging time and reduce the total cost and weight of the vehicle battery system.
