The chemical formula of MXene material is Mn+1AXn, where (n=1 – 3), M represents early transition metals, such as Sc, Ti, Zr, V, Nb, Cr or Mo; A usually represents the third main group and the fourth main group chemical elements; X represents the C or N element.

Recently, scientists at the Helmholtz Center (HZB) laboratory in Berlin, Germany, found that MXene material will greatly improve the energy storage capacity of the titanium based "MXene" pseudo-capacitor, and can produce batteries with faster charging speed.

Scientists have studied the carbon-based MXene Ti3C2Tx material on the BESSY synchrotron equipment, and analyzed the samples of the material in vacuum and aqueous solution using soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The analysis results show that the insertion of urea molecules into the MXene layer will significantly change the electrochemical properties of the material, which can increase the energy storage capacity of the material by 56%, due to the surface chemical changes caused by the presence of urea.

Although the research on MXene material is still at an early stage, in the field of energy storage, this material has shown its potential as a "pseudo capacitor", that is, the combination of the huge energy storage capacity of lithium-ion batteries and the rapid charging and discharging time of supercapacitors.

Scientists said that the oxidation state of titanium atoms on the surface of Ti3C2Tx MXene can also be observed by X-PEEM (photoelectron microscopy). When urea is present, the oxidation state is higher, which helps to store more energy.
