Von Berg co-founded SimpliPhi with Stewart Lennox in 2010. The company began to develop mobile portable batteries for the film industry.

The module developed by Lennox for the film industry has replaced the large lead-acid battery and diesel generator. "Because you can't shoot in the scene of diesel noise, pollution and everything else," it has also become the model developed by the company for the army.

When the military learned about SimpliPhi, the military banned lithium ion electrochemistry, but later learned that the company used lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemical substances. Finally, with the certification of the Ministry of Defense, lithium iron phosphate batteries were deployed to the front-line combat bases in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Von Berg said: "Create these mobile portable systems so that soldiers can carry them with them when performing tasks. Therefore, we can help remove the bull's eye and significantly reduce the number of fuel fleets."

The company plans to expand these mobile portable systems to the global residential and commercial fields, truly solve the energy problem and change people's views on energy. They can become their own power plants, generate foldable solar panels and small wind turbines, and even optimize diesel generators.

Von Berg believed that due to many examples of battery fires, people are increasingly worried about the safety of traditional lithium-ion systems, but many people in the industry still cannot distinguish lithium-ion chemicals. She also said that cobalt is harmful, while lithium is not. Although some measures have been taken to reduce the risks of cobalt-based lithium-ion batteries, when there is a chance to use low-risk LFP batteries, Why should we focus on unnecessary research and development to reduce the risk of high-risk batteries?

"We want to simplify the whole process, not need thermal monitoring, mitigation, liquid polymer cooling, and all other toxic elements that can be used to cool cobalt-based batteries, but spend more on maintaining a narrow thermal environment temperature." Nevertheless, SimpliPhi's system also has risks. "Where there is electric current, there is danger. But fundamentally, the non-toxicity of chemicals is very important."

In addition, compared with the typical cobalt-based lithium battery, LFP battery has longer cycle life, deeper discharge depth and faster charge-discharge rate. SimpliPhi also has competitors in the LFP field, including BYD and Sonnen. Although the latter does not design or manufacture batteries, it has developed a software platform to purchase batteries from other manufacturers to compete in the residential market.

Von Berg mentioned a project announced with Pepco in Maryland last week. It is composed of a 70.2 kW rooftop photovoltaic and a 46 kW/56 kWh battery system, which is the elastic center of power grid interruption. Now SimpliPhi's products are sold to the United States and 43 other countries.

SimpliPhi will look for partners in the fields of working capital and project development this year. Vonberg said that these companies may include "some large companies from natural gas to oil, which are seeking full integration." At present, SimpliPhi has been approached by several large multinational companies.

Von Berger put forward his own view on the battery field: technology is constantly updated, and we always pay attention to different chemical batteries, but we don't have to live in fear of new technologies, because our platform will not only enable us to integrate and innovate. When a more economical, efficient and durable energy storage technology emerges, we will also gladly accept it. We now use LFP battery because we believe it is the best choice at present.
