In two research papers published in the famous journal Joule and PNAS, the international research team led by Monash University has developed an efficient ultra-thin photovoltaic cell with the highest mechanical bending and stretching capacity and the ability to provide lasting power.

In Joule's thesis, researchers have successfully developed a new type of mechanically robust light absorbing material that can be used to manufacture ultra-flexible solar cells. These batteries can achieve 13% power conversion efficiency, maintain 97% efficiency after 1000 bending cycles, and maintain 89% efficiency after 1000 stretching cycles.

Dr. Huang Wenchao, a researcher in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of Monash University, said that the power conversion efficiency considers how much solar energy can be converted into electricity. The solar energy radiated on the earth is 1000 watts per square meter. Our equipment can generate 130 watts of electricity per square meter. The 13% efficiency we can achieve is one of the highest efficiency of organic solar cells.

In PNAS paper, the test shows that the performance of the solar cell after being treated with special methods has only decreased by 4.8% after an amazing 4736 hours. It can operate for more than 20000 hours (about 2.5 years) with the minimum degradation, and the estimated shelf life is 11.5 years.

The area of the solar cell is only 2 square centimeters, which is roughly the same as the 5c in Australia. Its weight is light enough to be supported by petals, and it can generate 9.9 watts of power per gram.

After further testing, this revolutionary device can be used as a battery substitute in many future technologies, such as mobile phones, watches, the Internet of Things (IoT) and biosensors.

Researchers from RIKEN, Japan, and collaborators from the University of Tokyo, the University of California, the Australian Synchrotron and Monash University co-chaired these studies. Researchers are trying to commercialize the technology.

According to the understanding of the microlithium-ion battery group, researchers have developed new materials and a simple post-annealing method to improve the mechanical and environmental stability of organic photovoltaic without reducing efficiency, thus improving stability and scalability. Annealing is a heat treatment that can change the physical (sometimes chemical) properties of materials to reduce their degradation. These solar cells were manufactured and tested in Japanese laboratories with advanced thin film deposition and characterization equipment. Some key parts of this research on equipment physics were carried out in the Renewable Energy Laboratory of Monash University and the Australian Synchrotron.

The microlithium-ion battery team analyzed that although this ultra-thin photovoltaic cell is small in size, its low-cost characteristics can be easily copied through continuous printing technology, which makes it an ideal choice for rapid tracking and mass production of wearable technology.
