Some critics believe that these developments epitomize the achievements made since the first anniversary of the launch of the five fuel cell vehicle demonstration city clusters in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanghai, Guangdong, Henan, and Hebei.

According to the "Database of Fuel Powered Cell Vehicles" published by the Hydrogen and Electricity Research Institute of the High Industrial Research Institute (GGII), from August 2021 to August 2022, the cumulative sales volume of fuel powered cell vehicles in the five demonstration urban agglomerations was 2590. According to the data released by the China Automobile Industry Association, the production and sales of fuel powered cell vehicles continued to rise rapidly. In September this year, the production and sales of fuel powered cell vehicles completed 183 and 202 units respectively, up 18.1% and 16.8% year-on-year.

At the same time, the upstream and downstream industrial chains within the demonstration city cluster have gradually improved, and multiple companies have achieved breakthroughs in product placement, technological breakthroughs, industrial layout, and other aspects. For example, the fuel powered battery city bus jointly produced by Jiangsu Jichong and Jinlong United Automobile Industry (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. is currently in the road test stage; Five hydrogen fuel powered battery sanitation vehicles and one 31 ton hydrogen fuel waste dump truck prototype jointly developed by Xinxiang Jichong and Xinfei Special Purpose Vehicles have been put into trial operation.

According to the introduction of Pangda Group, it is developing multiple models including cold chain vehicles, hydrogen fuel dump trucks, hydrogen fuel tractors, tourist buses, and other vehicles for the batch procurement and demonstration operation of hydrogen powered fuel cell vehicles with the domestic research and development and production company Jichong.

With our systematic forward design capabilities and metal bipolar plate research and development capabilities, we have achieved the domestic substitution of stack technology. Fu Yunfeng, co founder, director, and deputy chief engineer of Ji Chong Hydrogen Energy, said in an interview that the technical barriers to fuel powered cell stacks have been basically eliminated, and the closed-loop layout and verification from research and development to production and application of metal plate stacks have been preliminarily completed.

Fu Yunfeng revealed that the research and development team has completed the design verification and component development of the second generation of products. It is expected that the single stack and power density will increase by 20% to 30% compared to the first generation. It is planned to complete prototype development by the end of this year. In addition, the third generation of products will achieve breakthroughs in technology, better meeting the use needs of passenger cars and medium and heavy trucks. Prototype development is planned to be completed in 2023.

Previously, it was reported that hydrogen energy is expected to take the lead in commercialization in the field of transportation, and the localization of key materials for green hydrogen production, hydrogen fuel power batteries, and hydrogen refueling station equipment will become a hot track in the hydrogen energy industry. Some industry insiders also pointed out that the hydrogen energy industry is still in its infancy, and although issues restricting development such as technology, cost, and infrastructure are gradually improving, it still takes time to truly achieve a major breakthrough.

The development cycle of fuel power cell products is long, and after the prototype comes out, it needs to be fully tested and verified. The development of the industry needs to be gradual. Ji Chong, founder and chairman of hydrogen energy, Fu Yu, also has a similar view. For example, he said that in the future, the application of fuel powered cell vehicles will shift to the passenger car market. However, due to the higher requirements for product integration and reliability of passenger cars, and the greater difficulty, the development of this market will definitely take a process.

It is worth mentioning that reports show that many regions have recently issued plans to support the development of the hydrogen energy industry, one of which focuses on infrastructure construction. It is believed that under a series of favorable conditions, the delivery and operation of fuel cell vehicles in China will continue to be intensive.
