In response to the demand for large-scale energy storage and the rapid development of electric vehicles, key materials and preparation technologies with high specific energy, high power, long lifespan, and low cost are important directions for the development of lithium-ion batteries. Energy density, lifespan, cost, and safety indicators should be comprehensively considered. On April 25, 2017, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Science and Technology jointly issued a notice on the "Medium and Long Term Development Plan for the Automotive Industry". According to the requirements of the plan, by 2020, the specific energy of power lithium batteries will reach over 300Wh/kg, and efforts will be made to achieve 350Wh/kg. The system specific energy will strive to reach 260Wh/kg, and the cost will be reduced to less than 1 yuan/watt hour; By 2025, new energy vehicles will account for over 20% of automobile production and sales, and the specific energy of power lithium battery systems will reach 350Wh/kg. With people's pursuit of long range of new energy vehicles, it is necessary to improve the specific energy of individual batteries. Therefore, Dr. Lou Zhongliang believes that developing high energy density and low-cost lithium-ion batteries is an important technological competitiveness for future power lithium battery companies, and high specific energy will always be the unremitting pursuit of the lithium battery industry.

In response to the improvement of various performance and energy density of soft pack batteries, Thornton New Energy is focusing on research on standardization of battery cells and modules, lightweight packs, high energy density power lithium batteries, high-power batteries (PHEV and HEV batteries), fast charging batteries, energy storage batteries, and forward-looking advanced battery technologies. Regarding improving energy density, Thornton New Energy will optimize and improve battery cell design, including adopting a high nickel/silicon carbon system, increasing positive and negative electrode loading values, positive and negative electrode surface density, compaction density, and reducing liquid retention coefficient; In terms of battery system, optimization and upgrading will be carried out for structural design and manufacturing process, using lightweight materials, highly integrated mechanical and electrical heating, and using high energy density cells. Although the grouping efficiency of soft pack batteries is relatively low, with the development of lightweight materials and the increase in energy density of soft pack batteries, the grouping rate of soft pack batteries will be greatly improved, and the advantages of soft pack batteries will be highlighted. This is precisely the important challenge of Thornton's new energy campaign.

In July of this year, Thornton New Energy took the lead in achieving a power lithium battery energy density of 260Wh/kg and a system energy density of 170Wh/kg in the industry. Next, Thornton New Energy plans to achieve mass production of 300Wh/kg batteries by the end of 2019, and will be installed in large quantities on new energy vehicles in 2020, vowing to be the leader in soft pack power lithium batteries.

At present, the same project of 300wh/kg high energy density power lithium batteries from different domestic companies is in the research and development and exploration stage. Dr. Lou Zhongliang believes that there are still significant issues with the stability and initial efficiency of the highly popular nickel/silicon carbon system, which is based on achieving a battery energy density of 300wh/kg. The use of lithium replenishment technology requires high equipment and process requirements. Nevertheless, high nickel high voltage ternary and silicon carbon are still the mainstream technology routes in the power lithium battery industry, and are also the necessary path for the development of Thornton's new energy soft pack batteries. Nowadays, the development of Thornton New Energy 300Wh/kg batteries is undergoing electrochemical system evaluation, and the screening of silicon carbon negative electrode and NCM811/NCA positive electrode materials has been completed. The room temperature 1C/1C cycle has reached 800 times @ 80% capacity retention rate, and the high temperature 1C/1C cycle has reached 500 times @ 80% capacity retention rate. The next step will be to optimize the screening of electrolytes, separators, conductive agents, adhesives, etc. At this point, Dr. Lou Zhongliang firmly stated that the Thornton New Energy 300Wh/kg battery project may be at the leading level in China by then.

Under the stimulation of higher energy density, stronger safety, high energy density, and high safety demand, the demand for soft pack power lithium batteries continues to strengthen. According to data from Gaogong Lithium Battery, the demand for power soft pack batteries in China has been rapidly increasing in the past three years. Since 2017, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has released a total of six recommended models for promoting and applying new energy vehicles, The proportion of passenger cars and specialized vehicles using ternary batteries has exceeded 90% and 70% respectively. Due to the large proportion of ternary power lithium batteries using soft packaging, with the widespread application of power lithium batteries, the penetration rate of soft packaging batteries in the field of power lithium batteries has increased. By 2020, the demand for ternary soft pack power lithium batteries is expected to increase to 71.6GWh, with a market share of about 50%; The market penetration rate of soft package power lithium battery is expected to increase to 40%, reaching 79.4GWh.

In the future, with the gradual rise of China's new energy vehicle industry, the market space for ternary positive electrode materials is expected to further expand. With the characteristics of high energy density, good safety performance, and flexible design, ternary soft pack battery cells are expected to accelerate the increase of the penetration rate of soft pack batteries in the new energy vehicle market.
