Japanese and Korean battery companies are making a comeback

In 2015, due to the inability to enter the "Standard Conditions for the Automotive Power Battery Industry" (commonly known as the whitelist in the industry), Japanese and Korean power lithium-ion battery companies, as global suppliers of foreign car companies, were hindered from expanding in China. Therefore, currently, foreign-funded car companies are more inclined to use domestically produced lithium-ion batteries for joint venture brand models.

With the withdrawal of the "white list of power lithium-ion batteries" from the historical stage, Japan and South Korea's power lithium-ion battery companies have accelerated their "comeback" in the Chinese market and expanded their production of power lithium-ion batteries. Even so, its peak production time is almost consistent with the outbreak of pure electric vehicle models by foreign car companies, and the ambition behind it is self-evident.

For example, LG, one of the top three Korean companies, invested US $2 billion in a power lithium-ion battery project with an annual output of 32GWH in Nanjing in July 2018. In June 2019, LG and Geely Auto Automobile jointly invested in a battery factory; Samsung SDI plans to transfer the production of Xi'an, Cheonan, and Yushan factories to Wuxi to speed up the mass production of 21700 new batteries; SKI restarted its joint venture battery company BESK with BAIC in 2018 and planned to invest $490 million in May 2019 to build a second battery factory in China.

As for Panasonic, the only remaining lithium battery giant in Japan, it has already supplied XPeng through domestic battery companies in conjunction with Tianyi, thus ranking among the top 10 domestic installed capacity in April this year; In addition, in March 2018, Panasonic's battery factory in Dalian also began mass supply; With Tesla settling in Shanghai, Panasonic also expressed its willingness to cooperate with Tesla in building factories in China.

Who is better in multiple competitions? At present, it is difficult to judge the differences in battery technology between domestic and foreign countries from a technical perspective. However, in November 2018, United Commercial Bank of Switzerland (UBS) conducted a test and evaluation report on the batteries of Panasonic, LG Chem, Samsung SDI and CATL, which may be worthy of reference. The report shows that the cost of Panasonic batteries produced by Tesla Super Factory is 0.11 dollars/watt hour (about RMB 0.76 yuan/watt hour), which is far lower than the other three competitors. Among them, the cost of CATL batteries is about 0.15 dollars/watt hour (about RMB 1.03 yuan/watt hour), which is the highest among the four companies, and CATL has become the most competitive battery company in China.
