According to foreign media reports, since the first mainstream electric vehicle was introduced, global electric vehicle manufacturers have been working hard to solve the problem of battery consumption. French automaker Peugeot even proposed that if the battery of its car deteriorates within 5 years of operation, it can pay to replace the battery pack. However, Volkswagen seems to have a more efficient solution to this problem. Frank Blome, director of the Volkswagen's Center of Excellence for Battery Cells, said that their battery pack, like their upcoming electric vehicle series, is very durable.

However, considering that electric vehicle consumers hope their electric vehicles can last for at least 8 to 10 years, Volkswagen's statement seems a bit radical. Blome stated that for the upcoming series of electric vehicles, Volkswagen is designing around battery packs to maximize the use of space to store electrical energy. And now the battery packs are transferred and placed under the body, between the front and rear axles, allowing their electric vehicles to have a range of 340 miles (550 kilometers).

When it comes to the efficiency of such battery packs, Blome stated that as long as Volkswagen electric vehicle drivers insist on efficient charging, the new battery can still maintain a minimum charging capacity of 70% within 8 years or when the vehicle has traveled 100000 miles (160000 kilometers). Efficient charging requires car owners to choose normal charging instead of fast charging, and only charge the battery pack 80% full instead of 100% charged. Blome also suggests that charging the battery when the car's battery level drops to 50% instead of waiting for the battery pack to completely run out will help extend battery life.

Blome explained that Volkswagen produces electric vehicles on the MEB platform, and the battery pack of such electric vehicles has a "chocolate bar" structure that can accommodate a large number of battery modules composed of individual batteries. This type of modular structure makes the design process more flexible. If needed, Volkswagen can incorporate more modules into the system, thereby increasing the vehicle's range. Moreover, such structures are conducive to making the production of battery packs more cost-effective.

When it comes to integrated solid-state batteries, Blome stated that although solid-state battery packs are lighter and have higher energy density than lithium-ion batteries, they will not be able to achieve large-scale production for a considerable period of time. However, due to the higher economic efficiency, faster charging speed, and ability to support longer range of solid-state battery packs, Volkswagen may use them for electric vehicles before 2025 or 2030.
